model 60 problem

I have a mod 60 that has a weird problem. If I open the cylinder ,I can slide the cylinder right off without taking it apart.I have gone to a gunsmith and he said send it back.It has been this way for years. What should I do? Please help,LOL I don't really know how to send it back without it costing a fortune. The shipping(2nd day air)

Chances are someone took that gun apart and mixed up the screws.The screw on the right side above the trigger should be long enough to fit in the groove on the yoke .Take it out and compare it to the sideplate screws and I bet one of them is longer than the rest.

That isn't the problem the cylinder slides right off the yoke without taking the crane out of the gun.

On the left side there is a feature (not sure of it's name), lower right hand corner of the cylinder window, which keeps the cylinder on the yoke when it's open.

This is a 37, it's a shinny J-Frame , you'll see cylinder is held forward by that feature. What does it look like on your 60 ?

It looks like it has a groove worn through on the cylinder end and towards the grip area it is taller with a tiny bit of galling. How the heck do they fix it,do they weld a new stop on so to speak or something different.It shoots great but never had a smith with this problem and I have 5 of them.

It almost looks like it was thrown open a lot and it wore it just enough so it slides right off. This is the 2nd smith with a problem caused by the original user destroying a wonderful little revolver.

That little "nub" goes by the name, cylinder stop by some people.
That other thing that stops the cylinder from rotating, often called the "cylinder stop", is actually the "official" cylinder stop ?

At any rate, if you remove the side plate, and look closely inside the frame you can see where this little nub is "peened" into the frame, at least that is the case with the "K" frames.

It is not removable, nor serviceable by most of us scalawags, but can be replaced by S&W or a competent Smith&Wesson mechanic.

If you know the cylinder will fall backwards off the yoke system, and take care, I can not see where it would present a problem for shooting, but of course, fixed would be better !

You have one of two problems. Either the cylinder retaining lug is worn down or more likely was overbuffed at the factory to begin with. Or, your yoke is slightly out of adjustment .

I'm more inclined to believe your yoke needs a tweek . (by a qualified gunsmith, or the factory)

I would send it in to S&W for repair. I would not put up with the problem, particularly if this is a SD gun.

The FRAME LUG on older models is a replaceable part.
Most of the time the problem expressed is caused by a sprung yoke.
Any true S&W gunsmith can check that and re-align the yoke.
