First time poster here. I acquired a Model 60, 2" recently, and have a couple of questions.

The assembly number on the yoke does not match the one on the frame. They are both 5-digit numbers, and close, but separated by 263. Any suggestions or thoughts on how/why?

The serial number is ACNxxxx, indicating a 1983 DOB. Also on the frame is a 4-digit number: 7583. Does this indicate 75th day of 1983, or just a random number?

Thanks for any comments. I have followed this board for some time, but never posted.

Welcome! A photo of the two numbered parts you mentioned would help, but if the two are different it is possible parts were swapped during cleaning or reassembly of two different guns. The 7583 is probably another factory internal code. Hope this is helpful.

The SN you list evidently came off the butt of the gun. Being an 83 build, it should have a matching SN on the yoke recess, just above the Mod #. I say "should" as you can never say "always" with S&W. The assembly numbers are on the major parts only, frame, side-plate, yoke.

Thanks for the reply. There is no number above MOD 60.

A fixed sight gun of this era probably won't have the SN in the yoke recess, because the standard stocks wouldn't cover the N on the bottom of the grip frame.
