Model 60 Serial Number/Date of Manufacure

I have a S&W model 60 revolver with the following serial number:

R200XXX

Can anybody tell me when it was made? Also, what generation of Chief's Special is it?

1977-78.

Probably a Model 60-1. You should have a pinned barrel. They were released in 1972

It's impossible to tell when it was made. Without the full serial number one can only guess and still be off two years or more.

The model 60 was made from 1965 to '87, so yours (with a few minor detail changes along the way) is the same gun as any other in that 22 year period. There were two 60-1s made during the same time period, a 3" heavy barrel from 1972 (as noted above) and a 2" Target sighted one from 1985. The -2 seems to have been an NYPD version (although they are seen for sale) and the 60 was replaced by the 60-3 in 1988.
