Model 60 - surface rust advice

Fellas,

Genius that I am, I left my two-year-old 2" Model 60-14 in a humid environment for a couple days and it developed surface rust on the steel trigger and hammer. The stainless areas of the gun were left unscathed.

I "cleaned" most of it off with a few rigorous cleaning-oil rub downs, but I can still see discolorations where the rust was, so I know it is still there, taunting me and waiting to come back like a cancer. What, if anything, can be done about this and to prevent or minimize it from coming back?

I did a forum search and didn't see any other geniuses out there with a similar problem. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Try soaking the affected parts in Kroil

I'll agree with the kroil. A buddy of mine picked up my 342 for a feel a month or so ago. He handed it back to me and I put it in the safe. Went back the next day and the trigger was covered in rust. My buddy must exude salt from his pores. I got some 1000 grit emory paper and some kroil. Lightly rubbed the affected area with the kroil soaked paper. Cleaned it up pronto. Never would know it was rusted. I did catch the rust before it got to deep.

Eezox is your friend. Eezox, and CLP, are the two best rust preventatives on the market.

Kroil and some brass wool. Never steel wool - it leaves behind microscopic steel fibers that will turn to ------ RUST.

I believe the OP asked about removing rust which Kroil does very well. It's a creeping penetrating oil.

Yes you are correct. The OP also asked what to use to prevent rust. I was just trying to show what is the best for preventing it to begin with.

I've used both Break Free and Kroil on blued guns with no problems.

I only use Eezox, and CLP. I have used it on blued guns with no ill effects. Eezox is the best rust preventative made IMO.

DeeBee, thanks for posting that photo, it validates the fact that I
always apply EEZOX on the exterior surfaces of all of my guns.

Actually I just ordered a number of cans of EEZOX as "stocking
stuffers" for all of the gun owners on my list. My "been nice" list.

I also use Kroil, a lot, which serves it's intended purpose extremely well.

Kroil works really well.
I also use Fritz. It will bring the Bluing back.

You can remove the rust as mentioned above and treat the affected areas with your choice of rust preventative, but as long as you know where the rust was, it seems in the right light you can always see a discoloration...

After seeing the above photo it looks like I should order some EEZOX!! I've been using Slip 2000 EWL mixed with transmission fluid and it seems to work very well on all the guns I've used it on.
