I have previously posted in this thread but thought a little update might be in order.
In late 1989 I bought one of the new full lug S&W 6" model 17 revolvers. When the 617 came out shortly after I traded the model 17 for a 6" 617 No-Dash in February of 1990 and shot it very little in the years following. It rarely came out of the safe and then only for 'show & tell'.
In the past few years I got it out of the safe a few times with the intention of selling it but after 'fondling' it I would always put it back in the safe. A few months back I even got as far as listing it on gunbroker then cancelled the auction in a few minutes.
I hadn't shot it (and several other guns) in years and last month I made the difficult decision to start thinning out the herd and it was one that made the 'sell list'. I put it on gunbroker and this time I didn't take it off. It got sixteen bids from five different bidders and set a new record (as far back as you can search) on gunbroker for a standard 6" 617 no dash. I'm glad that someone got it who is going to use it.
Had I kept the model 17 it would have been worth quite a bit more than the 617 but who can foresee gun prices 20+ years down the road?
I haven't really missed it or any of the other five guns I sold in the first wave of thinning.
I also have a 4" 617 No-Dash that I set up to handle like my 646 that I was shooting in IDPA. At this point I'm not interested in selling it as I still shoot it fairly often.
In my limited experiences with 617 revolvers (only owning two) I have found them to be great guns. I'm confident that those who are looking for one will greatly enjoy the fruit of their search.
I have never handled an 8 3/8" 617 so I can offer nothing at all on them. Both the 6" and the 4" are terrific guns. Of the two I have shot and enjoyed the 4" gun far more than the 6", perhaps because it has such a compatible feel to my 646.
