Model 617 22LR

It is interesting to see so many people that want to buy a 617 with a 4-inch barrel. And at the same time it makes me frustrated, because I have a NIB 617 4-inch that I want to sell. The problem I have is the big hassle you have to go through to find an FFL and the shipping cost.
The last time I sold a gun was about 6 years ago and at that time it cost me $75.00 just for the shipping.

Where do you live (5 digit ZIP will do), I'll make you a list of FFLs. Buyer should pay anyway. If you do find an FFL to send it, they can us the USPS for lots less than FedEx, UPS, et al.

I snagged a 617-1, 4" about two years ago for $575. I did not realize how good a buy I had made. I had recently bought an 18-3 for a good price and I almost talked myself out of getting the 617. I later sold the 18, should have kept it , also.

Just bought a nib 4 in for 790 shipped, i paid all the money, but thats what they cost, bought it from out of state so at least no tax,ive got a beautiful set of S&W round but combat grips for it, bet its going to look and shoot great!!

Just took delivery of the 4 inch 617 today. The two piece grips are different. They cover the back strap. They don't feel as rubbery; more plastic feeling than the old good year rubber grips.

Macinaw, I put HyViz front sights on mine and really like it. The Anodized/Blued Ansac looks good there as well in your pick. Have you used it much yet?

I used the new speed loader for Steel Challenge. It worked as promised. No more crooked round to deal with.

I shot RFPI my time was 95.38 for five stages. 13.08 for S&H (smoke and hope)

I recently picked up a 6" 617. Bought it because it was available. Although it is a great shooter I would much rather have it with a 4" barrel.

I have previously posted in this thread but thought a little update might be in order.

In late 1989 I bought one of the new full lug S&W 6" model 17 revolvers. When the 617 came out shortly after I traded the model 17 for a 6" 617 No-Dash in February of 1990 and shot it very little in the years following. It rarely came out of the safe and then only for 'show & tell'.

In the past few years I got it out of the safe a few times with the intention of selling it but after 'fondling' it I would always put it back in the safe. A few months back I even got as far as listing it on gunbroker then cancelled the auction in a few minutes.

I hadn't shot it (and several other guns) in years and last month I made the difficult decision to start thinning out the herd and it was one that made the 'sell list'. I put it on gunbroker and this time I didn't take it off. It got sixteen bids from five different bidders and set a new record (as far back as you can search) on gunbroker for a standard 6" 617 no dash. I'm glad that someone got it who is going to use it.

Had I kept the model 17 it would have been worth quite a bit more than the 617 but who can foresee gun prices 20+ years down the road?

I haven't really missed it or any of the other five guns I sold in the first wave of thinning.

I also have a 4" 617 No-Dash that I set up to handle like my 646 that I was shooting in IDPA. At this point I'm not interested in selling it as I still shoot it fairly often.

In my limited experiences with 617 revolvers (only owning two) I have found them to be great guns. I'm confident that those who are looking for one will greatly enjoy the fruit of their search.

I have never handled an 8 3/8" 617 so I can offer nothing at all on them. Both the 6" and the 4" are terrific guns. Of the two I have shot and enjoyed the 4" gun far more than the 6", perhaps because it has such a compatible feel to my 646.

I love my 617-6, but the DA pull is ridiculous! I haven't measured it, but it is a bear at minimum. The SA pull is nice.

How is everybody's trigger pull?

I love mine. My LGS, called it "Dirty Harriet's Gun".

Looking for M617 4"

Do you still have a 617 4" you want to sell? If so Please E-Mail me at [email protected]. Thank You
Also Grumpy:)

I looked at several .22 revolvers and the S&W 617 is absolutely the best. I really like the 4" and anxiously waiting for the 6" to come in. Just wish they made a 8" in the same price range.[/QUOTE]

I SEARCHED FOR A USED 4", WITHOUT A LOCK FOR A LONG TIME, WITHOUT LUCK. I FINALLY RELENTED AND PURCHASED A NEW 10 SHOT--WITH THE IL, OF COURSE. IT WAS EXPENSIVE. THE IL HASN'T BEEN A PROBLEM, AND COSMETICALLY I HAVE GROWN TO ACCEPT IT. IT'S MY ONLY S&W WITH A LOCK. I SWAPPED THE GOODYEARS FOR A SET OF AHRENDS SMOOTH TACTICAL CONVERSION GRIPS, WHICH MUCH IMPROVE THE LOOKS AND HANDLING. I REPLACED THE PATRIDGE FRONT BLADE WITH A S&W RED RAMP BLADE, AND THE REAR BLADE WITH ONE WITH A WIDER NOTCH, FROM JACK WEIGAND COMBAT. I CAN PUT SIGHTS ON TARGET MUCH EASIER OUTDOORS WITH THIS SETUP.
I KNOW THAT LONG S&W REVOLVERS WITH FULL LUGS ARE MUZZLE HEAVY, SO I GRAVITATE TO THE 4" MODELS. I DO LOVE THE 8 3/8" MODELS HOWEVER, WHICH I USUALLY SHOOT OFF A BENCH AT LONG RANGE TARGETS. I PURCHASED AN 8 3/8" NO DASH 617, ON GUN BROKER. IT WAS LNIB WITH ALL THE PAPERS, COMBAT STOCKS, AND A 2X SCOPE WITH A B-SQUARE NO DRILL MOUNT. IT COST AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF MONEY. I PUT THE COMBATS AWAY FOR SAFE KEEPING, AND SOLD THE 2X SCOPE. I MOUNTED AN ULTRA DOT, RED DOT SIGHT, AND A PAIR OF PACHMAYR PRESENTATION GRIPS. I AM MORE THAN SATISFIED WITH THE FINAL PACKAGE. IT SHOOTS LIKE A RIFLE AND IS VERY ACCURATE WITH THE RED DOT. THE STING OF THE PRICE FADES QUICKLY, AS THE JOY OF OWNERSHIP AND SHOOTING INCREASES OVER TIME. THE 6 SHOT 8 3/8" GUN IS MUCH EASIER TO CLEAN THAN THE 10 SHOT 4" GUN. I HAVE NO DESIRE TO OWN A 6 INCHER…...

my 617 - modified

I haven't picked it up yet but I just bought a 617. This is the first generation one. It was a 6'' version but the previous owner had it trimmed down to 5'' and then repolished - a not inconsiderable cost on the top of the ticket price.
The trigger has been polished and adjusted and I have been assured that it's great.
The sights are made by LPA (I think they are an Italian company) and the grips I don't know if they are orginal or what?
Anybody who recognises the grips can let me know. This will be my 2nd S&W revolver - the other is a Mod 27-5.

If you do not have a 17/617, get yourself one.

I passed on the 6 inch and went with the 4 inch and have never looked back. I fell in love with the K22 while very young but had to wait far too long before getting one.

When we started going to the range, my wife took possession of it until I bought her a Buckmark with a small frame and dot sight for her shooting just so I could shoot the revolver again.

I had originally bought sight unseen from GB a Ruger SP-101 in .22lr. The trigger felt horrible, and the Grip was too small for my hands. I sold it at a Local Gun Show, and was fortunate to find a new 4" 617 Locally for $699. I have no desire to own any other .22 revolver.

That looks like a might fine 617. The gun shipped with the wood combat grips exactly like is on it, so I believe you can assume they are original. The 5" barrel is certainly unique, and is a good compromise between the 4 and 6.

CONGRATS ON YOUR PURCHASE. IT IS AN INTERESTING REVOLVER, AND I HOPE THAT IT SHOOTS AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS…..

I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY , "THIS IS THE FIRST GENERATION ONE". I TAKE IT TO MEAN THAT ITS A NO-DASH, THE FIRST ITERATION OF THE 617. THE GUN IN THE PICTURE APPEARS TO HAVE AN INTERNAL LOCK. IF THAT IS TRUE, ITS NOT A NO DASH. IIRC, THE IL ON THE 617 BEGAN WITH THE -5 MODEL. SOMEONE WILL BE ALONG TO CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG. THOSE GRIPS ARE S&W COMBATS. THEY ARE ORIGINAL TO LONG BARRELED EARLY 617s. MY 8 3/8" NO DASH WEARS THEM…..
