Model 617 and CCI Standard Velocity

I usually run high velocity ammunition in semi-auto rimfire pistols but since I recently switched to a 617 4" for steel competitions I was wondering if standard velocity CCI's would serve me better the the high velocity mini-mags? Are the SV dirtier because of the non coated heads? Can you run .22 shorts? Just a bunch of questions that have popped into my head. Thanks.

You can run anything that you want to in a revolver.I do,from cb shorts to stingers.
The shorts will leave a ridge that will make loading the longer cartridges more difficult,but it's easily cleaned away.
I haven't found CCI SV to be dirty.It's not about the type of bullet,it's about the powder used by various manufacturers.

In my 10 shot I run ammo that chambers the best. Some brands don't allow the round to just drop in,even fresh cleaned gun, so I get misfires often.

Thanks for the quick answer. I have about 4900 rounds of mini-mags so I will have to start looking into local shops and shooters to do a little trading with. My big problem is that I have 36gr HP rounds and I can't cross into NJ to shoot with them so RN rounds will be on the hunt.

I recently picked up some CCI Tactical RN Copper coated.

Out of 10 I get 3-4 misfires every time. Junk in my 10 shot...

They go through my semi's just fine.

Odds are if you are getting misfires in a 617 the chambers are just dirty enough the round is not seating fully, and the hammer fall is absorbed. If you would firmly seat the round I doubt if any CCI would fail on the first hit. If you are reloading from speed loaders under time, you may want to have your chambers cleaned/reamed with a SAAMI standard finishing reamer. S&W's are famous for overly tight .22RF chambers in the revolvers, and any residue will cause problems with fully seating. I did my 617-6, 10 shot, and now have no problems. I don't recall ever having a misfire with the 617, 17, 18, 63, 34 or Outdoorsman.

From my local sources CCI mini-mag and the CCI standard velocity are within $0.50 per 100 in price.

I shoot the SV in my .22 Compact, and they are much cleaner than any remington GB.

To echo H Richard, I noticed today when I used the speed loaders I had to run my finger around the rounds to make sure all were seated properly.

I will be running Federal #710 Game-Shok tomorrow because I have just enough of it for the match.

I didn't say, but that is the issue. Even seating them manually doesn't always give me 100% ignition.

Need to open up the chambers a bit I guess.

If you are shooting Steel Challenge competition then reaming my be a good idea. Ever since I reamed the chambers extraction has been almost effortless.

I am a steel shooter only competition wise so I will definitely be looking into this chamber reaming. Thanks for the pic and info.

Wish I ask more questions "here", because a few years back I got rid of a beautiful 617 because it only liked one kind of ammo & would miss-fire way too often with the ammo I preferred. Bet the cylinder reamer was at the end of it's production run, but that thought never crossed my mind & I traded it off. Great advice people!

Do you know what diameter that reamer is? I like that idea, and have a machine shop so I might already have a reamer if you wouldn't mind measuring it or maybe it is marked? thx
