I have a 4" 617 10 shot with a Vortex Venom Red Dot Sight
It is as others have said a real Hoot to Shoot.

I bought the gun from the wife of the S&W engineer who I think designed the gun . Mine has a stainless steel 10 shot cylinder. I also have the 6 shot cylinder and parts to convert it. I have the paperwork to him when he bought it. Honestly I think it is one more than Ashland think they had!

My bet is that you'll love whichever model you get. I've owned near every 617 in every dash number at one time or another. ( My former collection missing only the mountain gun version as I recall.) I still keep " a few" around. A 6" , 6 shot no dash and a pair of dash 6, 10 shots in 4 and 6". ( and I'll buy a 5" the first day they are available if S&W ever starts listening!)
FWIW, The 4" 10 shot gets used the most. I think it is the most versitile and quickpointing but the others do have their purpose. All 3 have a painted front sight to help my aging eyes . Give me a 10 shot 617 and a few DS Speed loaders and some swinging steel targets and I'm a smiling man for the afternoon.

Reading the early post makes me appreciate my 617 no dash that lives in the free state of Arkansas. The acquisition took 42 seconds to see how much was in billfold. Shooting ranges are rare since you can still buy land below 2000 per acre. Keep posting cause it really makes me appreciate home. Vote right and vote often

I picked up this -4 a few months ago and was able to get it for under 6 bills. Identical one sold online recently for $1476 so I reckon I did ok. I definitely need to highlight the front site or stop using targets with dark centers. You've picked a great revolver. Best wishes in your quest.

I have both the 4" and 6" with Hogue black rubber grips. Can't go wrong either way. I prefer the 4".
Hey Mr. Green are those barrels original? Been thinking about a 6" barrel with no lug.

The 617 is awesome. I shoot mine all the time. I found this one at a garage sale recently and it looked nice.
