Model 625, to buy or not to buy?

If a person does not need the power/penetration of a 44 Magnum, I think a S&W revolver in 45 ACP is the best choice.

The price point is what it is worth to you. I have seen a bit less and many a lot more. I feel very, very, lucky to have found a 625 in 3 inch. 45acp about two weeks ago. Price was $855. Had an urge and went to Lightning Arms and there was a set of Spegel Extended Grips and there went another $175.

I retail and have for about 30 years as part-time funds to pay for my addiction to the shooting sports. You may spend a bit more and maybe a bit less over time. But after 30 years of retail as a second job, I have learned the value to me, NOT price, is what is important.

If you want it and feel you can have fun and enjoy it, that is a great part of the value.

Now on the 625's, I now have three. A Mountain gun, I use on my bike, pedal jockey not motor, for dog's both four and two legged. I am in meth, drunk and moron country sometimes when I ride.

I have a four inch that is in the house and have a blast shooting. Download, upload, change bullet weight and do not have to play with springs like my 1911's.

They are addictive and what else to watch out for is the accessories.

Best if you decide.

Thank you Gentlemen, the response is overwhelming! I pulled the Trigger last night and will pick it up tomorrow.

Thank you for all of the advice and look forward to sharing some pics.

Jody

I recently paid $630 for a 5" 625-4 on gunbroker and I would do it all over again with no hesitation.
That is a very desirable gun and they are getting difficult to find.
Congrats.

Pictures?

You guys have me jonesing for a 5" 625 in .45 ACP.
Is the general consensus that the "-4" is the best one to town?
What other dash #'s are desirable?
I have a 3" 625-4 and want a 5" to go with it.
Thanks!

I think most will agree the -3s and -4s are the most sought after.
Many will also say the 4" models have more value due to IDPA regs on barell length.

Personally, I'd jump on any pre lock 625 I could get my hands on for a fair price.

From what little I know, about the guns and the fact I own a 625 three inch barrel (just got it), 4 inch barrel and also a mountain gun, I would say, get a pre lock of you preference of barrel, length. Two are -3's and one is -6 (mountain gun)

Functionally between the -2, -3, -4, -5, -6 and what ever, for use I do know that much difference other than firing pin and when MIM was started to be used. Again, I am not qualified for technical differences. I just prefer the prelock's maybe they look or feel to me to be a bit better built.

I am not a purist, but functionally yet to have an issue. Between the two 4 inch guns after close to 1000 out of each. I have not fired the 3 inch enough yet but I really, :D like it.

The biggest issue is this unique items reproduce at the most in opportune times. They love to feed on plastic cards that hide in wallets, sheet of paper in checkbooks, and just madly consume the government debit cards (formally called cash before the stimulus plan) ;)

Best in your choice.

Be safe and keep the brass flying

Do your research but you get what you pay for front end or back end.

This 625-2 Model of 1988 5" is one of my favorite revolvers. It's easily the most accurate. I have modified this one with a red ramp front sight and Ahrends retro classic stocks. After an action job by Nelson Ford of Phoenix, it is hands down the smoothest double action revolver I own, and I have a classic Python that doesn't even come close. Note the overtravel screw on the trigger. Single action let off is like breaking the proverbial glass rod with virtually no perceptible movement. It fires even military cartridges without the clips if necessary. Ford calls this the "Cadillac of Smith revolvers" and I'd have to agree. I bought the original gun in 2005 for $525 and have never regretted it.

Paladin, that is a fine looking revolver!
Thanks for posting.

Now where's the "drool" smilie.

My 625-8 in the 5" configuration and with-out the benefit of any extra attention is easily my favorite and most accurate gun and the trigger DOES at least equal that on my Colt Python for sheer joy-in-use!

My 625-6 (5") Model of 1989 and my 625-8 Jerry Miculek Special (4") are my two favorite revolvers. Here is a picture of my 625-6:
