Ed, we really need more info. There are three variations of 629s with no dash: Model 629: The 44 Magnum Stainless, Model 629: The .44 Classic Stainless and Model 629: The .44 Classic DX (Deluxe) Stainless. It would help if you provided a serial number so it can be dated. I'm not familiar with P&R cased. Also, your location can sometimes effect the value up or down depending upon what that model is going for in that area.
OldChief, Excellent points! The P&R means the barrel is Pinned and the R indicates the chambers of the cylinder are Recessed. On the frame, the serial number is N779XXX and indicates MOD-629. It indicates 44 MAGNUM on the barrel and is an early 6" Stainless model. It is NOT a later Classic Stainless or Classic DX Stainless. I totally understand that a "value" will necessarily encompass a range from low to high. I'm just looking for a reasonable "ballpark" range from knowledgeable posters on this forum. Being the evolutionary equivalent of the 29-2 the 629 is the only SS variant that is P&R and as such has become a bit of a collectors gun (and it sounds like you have all the goodies),
Condition and originality of package are paramount in a collectors gun and I would guess a high condition package would bring $1000 to $1400 locally and likely more at auction nationally .
With shooters the P&R 629 (no dash) is a bit of a conundrum as IIRC early guns are prone to issues from soft metal in the yoke compared to the 629-3 and 629-4 which are IMO the high water mark of the 629's design evolution due to their new "endurance package" that improved durability , factory pre drilled for scope mount, old school forged internals and being priced in the same range.

One should be able to take a 95% gun and remove the few small flaws in the finish without being noticeable. That is the beauty of stainless Smith revolvers. Depending on the grips, they need to be in the same condition but one can usually do some light work on those too if there aren't any real deep flaws.
I have paid in the past three years right at $1,000 for both a 98% 6" 629 no dash, and the same for a new old stock 8-3/8" 629 no dash with box. Prices have softened this year, maybe 5-10% of what they were 18 months ago. Nailing an exact value is a bit more difficult.
I would expect that you could get the same for a 95% gun with presentation case and all paperwork. It might not sell the same day that you listed it, but it would sell. A mint gun would bring an extra 100-150.

The 629s were introduced in late 1979 and shipment of the 6" guns to the public started in 1980. Your N779xxx gun could have been shipped around May or June of 1980. The 4" and 8 3/8" were introduced in 1981. The -1 change started in 1982 and about the same time period the alpha-numeric serial numbering system was introduced. The guns that are desirable to the collectors will be P&R with an "N" serial prefix. The 4" and 8 3/8" barrel lengths are harder to find. Many of these guns were shipped with a Mahogany presentation case until 1983.

Have never seen one in 4 inch.

I bought one when they first came out around 1979. Unfortunately, I sold it as I already had my old 29. Sad to say!! At the time, I was bummed that it had a 6 inch barrel. Are you buying or selling?

Some how I have collected one of each of these.
I don't think the grips on the 4" are original. I traded a Ruger Red Hawk for it at a gun show back in the 80's. The owner didn't know what he had and I didn't either until years later.
The 6" and 8 3/8" have the original boxes plus the presentation cases. The blue "flocking" on the presentation cases has "turned loose" for lack of a better term.
Funny story, I bought the 8 3/8" on a gun auction site in an internet cafe in Cabo San Lucas in 2004.

4 inch?
I have a 4 inch in high condition, original grips in like condition. Gun only-nothing else. Action is rock solid. About a year ago I thought about selling it but had no idea of what it was worth. It just feels so good in the hand so I decided to keep it for now. Thanks for the great thread. Now I have a better idea of what it is worth.
