Model 63 or 617?

I don't have a 63, if I did, I'm sure I'd love it, they're great guns. I do have a 617, 6 inch. I love this gun. Best shooting handgun I've ever owned. I'd never get rid of it.

hmmm... everything i read suggests the 617 is that little bit better...

I have two 617s (6 shot & 10 shot) in 6" versions and a 2" Model 63. I also had a Model 63 4" in the past.

I would trade my Model 63 in a heartbeat for a 4" 10 shot 617. As I am a huge fan of the Model 617.

Well just to put in my 2 cents.I have three 617 in the house.
Well the third one is been on order since before Christmas.
So I'm not telling no lies two are in the house.I have a 4" and 6".
The one on order is for the wife it will be a 4'.I almost bought her a 63 but she likes the 617 she has shot both. She already has the set of grips that were the cause of her getting this gun.We both shoot double action.Fri night at the club is plate night. The more you shot it the better it gets. You will love it. looks like i have a line on a 617. will know in about a week!

They are both great guns .
I personaly like having one of each which solves the dilemma.

If you can only have one there are some things that tip the scales in either direction.

If accuracy is paramount a longer barrel 617 will probably outperform a 63 but expect much more muzzle weight especially with a 6" barrel.

If you intend to pick up a Model 686 in the future get the 617.

Likewise, If your intention is to get a J frame 38 or 357 and want a partner gun the 63 is the wiser choice.

If you will only be terminating tin cans and prefer a smaller frame over a larger one the 63 is the better bet, Especially if you have small hands.

When teaching beginners, girls almost unanimously prefer the smaller lighter J frame .22. and guys like the larger K frame.

I didnt know Canada had restricted barrel lengths.
If 4" is a "Bad" gun and "6" is ok?....What about a 4.5" or 5" barrel?

Above 4", even by a bit, is o.k.- restricted vs prohibited.

Caliber also matters- believe .32, .25 for example are also prohibited, regardless of barrel length.

IMHO When you want to do some 'serious' target shooting, I would go for the 617, as I find that with my 4" Model 34 [ie; the blue version of the 63] it is a bit harder to get my normal average than with my Model 18-2, a 4" K frame.
And as I traded a 617 for the 18-2, I know the K's are just a bit better suited for target shooting.

But I must add: I LOVE my Model 34 so much that it almost feels as if I am betraying it by saying this! These smaller frame models are great fun to shoot and for me it brought FUN back into shooting :)

At the end, it will be YOUR choice which one to pick.
Maybe an even better suggestion: take both! ;)

So, I seem to have come across a good deal on a used model 17 (not 617). Have placed my order, and hopefully it arrives next week. Will keep the forum posted!

Great!
Personally, I`d prefer the Model 17 over a 6¨ Model 617.
But that is because of my troublesome right arm, not based on shooting-quality of the latter.

You will love the Model 17, I am sure of it!

Just added a 4" Mod. 63 no dash to my .22lr collection which replaced a Taurus 94 which wasn't a bad gun either. Also have a 2" 34-1 and a 4" 18-3 and a Marlin 39A rifle. Have handled some new 317's and 617's w/IL but didn't think the same quality was there. An older 317 may still call out my name yet.

Used Model 17 instead! Anyone have a'pdf' manual

I came across a used Model 17, and it finally arrived (by mail) on Thursday.

I ordered it sight unseen from a vendor in another povince, and on the whole, I'm reasonably plased- bit of blue worn off the muzzle edges, can see mark on the cylinder etc- they had made it sound absolutely pristine, and sadly, it's not.

But for $375 Cdn (+5% tax) shipped, think I did okay.

I called S&W, and they say this was probably built about 1987. They may have a photocopy owner's manual they can send.

But, would anyone have either a PDF, or a suggestion where I could actually get an appropriate owner's manual? Thanks in advance.

I'd be all over that like red beans on rice in that condition at that price:eek: Looks pretty darned good to me from your pictures-a little muzzle wear is reasonable as is the turn mark on the cylinder.

Thanks- that's reassuring. First revolver- want to have reasonable expectations so I don't want to be too hard on the seller.

now where the heck to get a 'real' manual?!

Awesome!!!!!

Thanks Engine49guy; I really appreciate it!!!!

...so now i catch myself thinking about a new 63.... ; )

Congrats on the 17!
Looks like a gun in good condition, once you have shot it all your doubts will be cleared, I'm sure! :)

A 63 would make a nice companion, yes.

So now I've done it- bought a second, nicer but not perfect, Model 17.

Sold the first- because along the way I also acquired a model 19. : ) So, it's got a big brother to keep it company.
