Model 64-2 Project: 1st Questions

My ex-CDC model 64-2 .38 Special stainless arrived today and I have a few initial questions. (Apologies in advance, I'm a Smith newbie and you guys must see these all the time. I searched, but couldn't find specific answers for a 64-2).

1. Is +P safe to shoot in it? If so, is it advisable to practice with normal 38 Special and only occasionally use +P?

2. Is dry firing okay for this particular Smith? Snap caps not necessary, recommended, or required?

Here's a 'before' picture of it as I type this post:

My son and I are going to a plate shoot tonight and we're going to brink it along to see if it will knock anything down.

Hi, a Model 64 provided it is in good mechanical condition is + P safe from everything that I've heard and read. Making a habit of it would be a little costly. I just got a model 67, and I bought a box of W.W.B. +P hollow points, but will shoot standard .38's MOST of the time. I also plan to start reloading .38's. If you desire a bright shiney look, use some Flitz Metal Polish on it, works wonders!! Don't know about dry firing, will leave that to someone more knowledgeable than me. Enjoy your gun, my son is looking for something like that for his C.C.W. gun. Bob

Presuming the gun is in good mechanical condition, there should be no problem with +P ammo. I have a 2" 64-4 and I use Speer Lawman 158gr TMJ +P loads quite a bit for practice.

As for dry firing, again, there should be no problem, but I would recommend using snap caps or dummy rounds if you plan on doing a lot of it (and you should...it's a great skill builder and action smoother). I do quite a bit of dry firing (lately I've been averaging 20-30 minutes/day, probably the equivalent of 150-200 "rounds"), and I use 3 sets of A-Zoom dummy rounds.

I have been dry firing my Smith revolvers since Custer was a Corporal, and I have found 2 serious consequences...
It makes me a better shooter and it slicks up the action....

I have never used a snap cap in my life...

That gun will take about as many +P's thru it as you can stand to shoot...
It might loosen up one of these days.......but none of us will be around to see it most likely

Funny thing. I just got a M64-2 today as well. CDC marked. They told me the grips had no numbers and they do. Mine matched. BTW, book is all over the place as to DOB on these guns. It is a M64-2 # 1D54638, no XXX's. 2" RB. Anyone know for sure? Thanks, Big Larry

I've broken the hammer-mounted firing pin on my gun while dry firing. Did the dry firing cause the breakage? I don't know, but I can't see how cushioning the firing pin while dry firing is a bad thing.

Why buy expensive snap caps. Once fire cases, swapped out every once in a while are MUCH cheaper!

I called it a 'before' picture because I'm making it a project gun. I'm planning on a spring kit, new grips, and polishing it to within an inch of its life.

We took it to a steel plate shoot last night. Here's my son with it:

We were somewhat handicapped for lack of a speed loader. Can anyone tell me what model speedloaders will work for this Model 64?

I believe any 6 shot K Frame will work, like the model 10.

If you still have doubts about dry firing your gun and using +P ammo, call S&W Customer Service and ask them.
