I came across this Model 64-4 over the holidays. I am not familiar with these. How's it look to the experts?

Thanks,
Dave

I was bidding on a 3" DAO recently. To me that might be the ultimate .38 special. This 2" example looks great though. Should definitely be a great shooter or depending upon the condition collectable piece. I love my DAO 4" that I currently have but am always watching out for something slightly shorter!

What was final price on 3"er. Was it in box and like OP's gun?

M64-2, finally

Here is a new acquisition for me, a M64-2 I found after a long wait on GB, I paid $481 with this great Don Hume holster. I for one like to mention what I paid for a firearm for a couple of reasons, 1. Why not? 2. I like when others do so out of interest to what likewise firearms sell for regionally as my primary outlet for acquiring S&W revolvers is on the internet. I mention this as a result of seeing many not comment regarding price and while I respect their privacy as I stated before, why not ? To a certain degree it helps educate all who share a mutual interest. If I waited for the typical post WW2 "K" frames I typically buy I would wait a long for the S&W revolvers in this little town of mine that seems to not share in my interest in revolvers.
I passed on many a M64 with institutional stamps and the like but would have grabbed yours in a heartbeat although my real preference is for precisely what I purchased, a SATIN STAINLESS finish. I was rather surprised to see the brushed finish which in my opinion is a little less forgiving when it come to both care and repair of minor blemishes, very nice firearm IMHO, I have a hard time letting a S&W "K" frame snubbie in 90% condition get away as they are becoming harder to come by, just look at the M15, my favorite. While this jewel was in great condition both it and the holster got a Ren Wax treatment.

If I remember correctly it didn't have a box and hit the $700's. I was hoping the DAO would keep it lower but no such luck.

I think the price is a bit high, to me, but if I didn’t already have one I’d try to negotiate down as much as possible.
When I lived in NY these guns were all over the place from guys retiring.
About two years before I moved a friend had a safe full of Smith and Ruger NY-1’s in all barrel lengths that he wanted to get rid of.I took forum member wheelgun28 with me to his house and he bought most of them. He now has the nicest collections of NY-1’s of anyone I know, including Ruger NY-1’s.

My 2 inch below.

Edit: Forum member BigBoku is the NY-1 expert on this forum, ask him if you need verification regarding the gun.
Should be marked NY-1.

Btw, the finish on the later Smiths was called vapor honed.

From the photo it appears to be a standard NY-1 configured model 64. The 2" was the least common of the three barrel lengths but (if it matters to the OP) not all were sold to NYPD officers. Other departments may have issued them or it could have been sold to a distributor/dealer. An SWHF letter of authenticity would clear that up.

Forum member R.M. Vivas is also an authority on the NY-1 revolvers; he wrote the (chapter of the) SCSW book on these. He is not here often, however.

Without the serial number on the frame and the NY-1 marking I would be cautious.

Attached you will see my Brinks Trade in DAO model 64.

Without an expert looking at it or a letter I would tread lightly at that price. I have less than that in this model with purchase and makeover.

Mine has been sent to S&W for a Combat Action Package which provided the bead blast finish. But to be honest I cannot recall what finish it had when I purchased it.

Here also is a 4" Brinks trade in model which was DAO from the factory.

2" K frames are so cool. I used to not like how they looked but they're growing on me. Especially the SS ones. I'd be all over that gun for the right price. And I if I had the money. :)

That does seem high though. Like 100-200 too high. I suppose if it's like unfired or something it may be worth 729.

Nice revolver, In 1990 I was issued (but had to pay $154) a 4" M-64, and purchased a 2" M-64 from the NYPD Equipment Section. I think the off duty was about $200. Good revolvers, but we were the silver gun rookies, not grown up enough to have a hammer spur. The spur was removed mostly due to shinanigans during roll call, where the guy standing behind you reached up and cocked your M-10 IN the swivel holster.

Just for sh1ts and giggles, try and get a cocked M-10 out of an NYPD swivel holster! Lots of fun to watch!

It was Marvin Yearwood killing Paul Fava that was the end of the spurrwd hammer revolvers in NYC. Yearwood had Fava up on a wall and had his model 10 to his head. Cocked the hammer, probably to show Fava he was Dirty Harry, and BOOM! Right behind the ear.

I do remember last class with Model 10’s calling first class with Model 64-1’s “rookies”. Guys with 6 months less time! And roll call telling guys in the mid 90’s “anybody without a blued gun is working Times Square Ball drop!

In my opinion that gun is about $200 over priced.

I agree. At least 200 over. It’s a model 64 with a bobbed hammer. Guys we’re selling them and their whole duty rigs for $100 to buy an off duty 9MM or to pay for the night sights and leather for the new service 9MM. the guns were free but you had to pay like $80 for the night sights and duty gear was like $150. Off duty .38’s we’re selling for less than $200. Model 640’s were nearly Given away.
