Model 64 - New or Used?

The 64 is my all time favorite Smith. I know that may seem odd, but it's true. Ideal reliable stoppers with 158 FBIs, and enough shots to win any civilian gunfight if you look at the real world results.

I got a used departmental trade in in top shape for $250 last year and that was on Gun Broker. You'd play hades getting a new 64 for double that, and IMHO... well I won't go into it because we aren't supposed to be negative towards the new Smiths, so I'll shut up now.

Model 64

The older Model 64's are great guns. This one's from 1981.

Paid 200.00 for a 1 in Good+ cond 10 years ago... shot the heck out of it... flawless operation.... my 2nd go to firearm. Oh and BTW anyone who says the 38 spl wont kill your nuts.... perfect for Civilian usage.

The trick with buying used is finding one that hasn't been futzed with by someone who thinks they're a gunsmith. Just plain wear is generally easy to deal with and not particularly expensive. Replacing butchered parts, however, can get both troublesome & expensive.

Well I may as well jump in here, too. My 64-4.

A local Cabela's has a 4" 64 that was sold in Europe. It has all the inspector and proof marks on it, as well as the importers stamp. No police markings on it, $650.

Damn!!! I was gonna ask if the 64 came with a round butt and 3" barrel. I had no idea there was a 2". Now I have something else to keep an eye out for.

To the OP. Used.

Thanks. Sorry for the small picture. Still trying to learn to post on here.

MES-LA You made an excellent decision! Yours looks exactly like mine! I posted about it earlier but did not put up a pic of my 64-5. Excellent choice on grips to if you refer to my pics. Enjoy yours as much as me with mine. Excellent guns

Very nice! I have a couple of J frames (637 and 642), but this is my first K frame. Really like the feel of it.

If you plan on using vintage holsters go with a used 64. The new ones have a slightly longer barrel that may interfere with seating in some holsters.

Here is my 64-5 DAO. It's not my favorite gun, I don't really have a use for it. It's not a 357 and it's not a 3" barrel. You can't cock it or even adjust the sights. I'll probably just give it away some day.
