Model 64 -- Which?

OK. My 64 arrived today. It is a 64-5 with firing pin on the hammer. Serial # CCH05XX and stamped "Made in USA, Marcas Registradas, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Mass." on right-side frame.
A few minor scratches and a couple of small nicks on bottom of yoke and front of trigger guard. Rusty grip screw and as dirty as I have ever seen a gun. :)
But I'll say this; the minute I pulled it out of the box, I fell in love with it.
Good balance, light for a revolver (esp compared to my 629) and it has a hair trigger in SA that breaks in what seems like 1mm of pull (just gently touch it, so to speak). Cylinder is pretty tight and bore is clean. Very light cylinder line.
I think it's a keeper, here are some pictures.

That trigger needs to be fixed ASAP. Does it carry up fully on every chamber? Looks like a nice revolver. I like 64's . . .

Sorry don't know terminology of revolvers well. "carry up on every chamber"?
When I pull the hammer back cylinder rotates and locks on the next chamber fine, and hammer is solidly locked back, and ready to go. DA is working like I would expect, and aligns properly like my other revolvers.
All I was suggesting is in SA the trigger has what seems to be about 2-3 lb pull and it only moves that 1 mm, or so it feels, before the hammer drops. "Hair trigger" comes to mind here, and that is the way I like them. :D

Good looking gun. You made the right choice on taking the older model. Triggers on the S&W's are the best in the business. Enjoy it. Congrats on the purchase.

Thank you. I cleaned it, removed and washed the grips, and looking even nicer. Maybe some Flitz will really make it pretty.

Pull the hammer back slowly and rotate through each chamber of the cylinder. Does each chamber lock up before the hammer locks back?

Serial # CCH05XX
October 1997.

The M64-5 is an interesting transition piece. It has the old style traditional frame and forged hammer, but a MIM trigger and cylinder release latch. By 1998 the new style frame was in production, the M64 became the -6 with a frame mounted firing pin and MIM hammer.

The only question: is it a round butt or a square butt? I believe they made some of each. I have a -5 very much like yours and it is a round butt. Had it less than a year, and with shipping and fees I have about $410 into it.

Regarding your light single action trigger, first thing I'd do is check for "push off". That's a real safety concern on guns with a light single action. Cock it back, finger off trigger, then push the hammer forward with your thumb. Don't use all your might and gorilla like force, just push the hammer firmly. The hammer should not release. If it does, take it to a smith and get it fixed ASAP. Do not carry it loaded.

Usually, a stoning of the sear can return safe operation and you only pay the smith's labor. Maybe a $50 fix. If it's to far gone a replacement hammer and/or trigger would be needed.
