I was shown a Model 640 today. I think it was a -1. I am sure it is a handful firing 357 mag loads. My question is will that gun stand a regular diet of 357? I am sure it is a handful to fire, but my question is not about the personal side effects but rather the mechanical integrity of the gun itself. Thanks

If it was a .357 Magnum it is a -1. Yes, with full power .357** ammunition they hurt like Billy-be-damned when you light them off. I have the Ergo Delta Grip on mine and it helps some.

(** 15.3 gr 2400, 158 gr, LSWC that run 1520-1550 FPS from an 8 3/8" Model 27.) You won't want to shoot many of these! But the gun should take just about as many as you will ever want to shoot unless you are a masochist or brain dead!

My oldest 357 Magnum J-frame (more than two decades old) is well over 7000 rounds of full power ammunition through it by now. It is probably over 8000, but I am not one of those folks that logs every round he shoots into a spreadsheet. I just do not have that much free time on my hands.

All my family members carry, train and teach with quite a few of the 357 Magnum J-frames

Wow! What a collection! I have a few SW revolvers but none with a J frame. I've been considering a 640 or 640 Pro as a carry gun. I tried shooting a 38 special through an aluminium frame J frame and it wasn't a pheasant experience. That's why I'm thinking about buying a 640 though I haven't had a chance to try it, yet

There is a beauty engraved on auction site. Buy it now price of 699. I do not know if that is a good price, but I held it in my hand yesterday and it is mint. There are several, this one is from a company in RI

I have a 640-1 and they will handle a lot of shooting with magnum loads. The major issue with these little magnums is peening of the cylinder bolt notches. Rapid fire shooting will accelerate the peening.

I enjoy carrying my Mod 60 357 on my waistband under my T shirt.
The 5 shot does not bother me as I also carry a black plastic 6 round cartridge holder in my pocket.
The recoil and blast isn't that bad.
I like the power this cartridge has in a close encounter.
It is a proven stopper upon the perp.

Shooting any handgun is all about the grips/stocks.

The Karl Nill for S&W Centennials makes the things feel like K-frames. No problem with magnums, no matter how many.

Many people think .357 J Frames don't make a lot of sense. I am not in that camp. It is nice to have some power level options and if the gun can handle .357s it ought to shoot .38s forever.

I have one. I carry either the 640 or a 442. 640 is a breeze with .38 +p, and that’s the typical load. I upgrade to .357 for the woods; bears, pack of coyotes, etc. Never had a problem in the outdoors, NO idea if .357 would do the trick if I did, but at least I feel safer in my ignorance with .357. :) Anyhow, I’ve put a lot of rounds through it, .357 but mostly .38 +p, and it locks up as tight as ever. I’ve seen people on here who have carried and shot 640s for decades with no problems. I trust mine. :)

I love my 640-1, but it’s a handful with magnums - couldn’t imagine lighting one off in a 340. For carry, the first 4 are Gold Dot +Ps and the last round is a magnum.

Grips are everything when shooting a .357 J frame. I really like Pach's. And you don't have to shoot full house magnums. If you reload you can make-up dozens of different loads. I'm not recoil sensitive so I shoot pretty hot loads. I really like my 640 Pro.

Wrap the nickeled/engraved M49 for me. I'll PM my address. :D
That is one of my favorites. Unfortunately it is not a Model 49

It is the 39th Model 649 produced. On that first day of production back in 1985, Smith and Wesson selected twenty-five Model 649s for A+ Engraving to commemorate the introduction of the Stainless Bodyguard.

It is one of the most incredible finds I have come across in four decades of trying to improve my collection. I am the second owner of that revolver

The Factory Ivories look much more spectacular in person

Fooled me with the group photo, :o especially with the ivory. I see the difference in the close-ups.

Still... that is just gorgeous!!!
