Picked this up at a gun show, didn't realize the grip variant until I got home. Already switched the grips out for the arched ones that raise the point of aim up for me and make it almost perfect

Actually, you have something special here, I suspect you may not be aware. In your first picture, the 659 is sitting on a S&W box that is also marked with the Lear-Siegler logo.

If that's the original box for this pistol and the serial number matches, I suspect the model says "6590."

This is one of the early guns for the introduction of the 3rd Gen line. I believe collectors refer to them as "transitional", although I have also heard the term "pilot gun." I'm not sure exactly what we collectors mean for "pilot gun", I believe yours is a transitional.

They also made the AIP guns, but those carry an AIP-serial prefix.

These guns are special and limited, the original box with intact end-label is key to their collectibility.

What price did you pay? I wouldn't say they carry a huge premium... but they do to folks that specifically chase them.

You made a great purchase!

paid $715 out door, box and 4 mags, if it has been carried or shot it wasn't much

My first S&W automatic was a 669 that had atrocious aftermarket
grips. I couldn't find originals anywhere.
Fortunately, the 6906 grip is easily adapted and fits great.

So if we go by what the flyer says then the OP's pistol is a Pilot gun?

Sevens, I would say interim by going off of the info less than 150 made?

Well if we get a look at the box end label, that should tell the tale.

I suppose I wouldn't originally see that the 659 I got at a gun show was different once I got it home.

I do hope that the box label would be shared too.

I saved an image of a RSR Transitional "659". It's officially a 6591. There has been a few transitional examples, (9mm & .45 acp's,) being offered lately. They are an interesting sub group that I like to follow but won't be focused on.
