model 66-1 has been my carry gun for a couple years and I shoot it often. It is factory engraved A Class. I just noticed the barrel seems like it is over tightened. How does a pinned barrel move?? I called smith to have them fix, I bought the gun new in box. The lady who answered the phone said it was too old for them to work on it. (WTH) Does that make sense??

If S&W does not have the necessary parts on hand to replace any worn/damaged ones on a pistol out of warranty that they are requested to repair, they will decline working on it. It's a business decision on their part and should not be considered as a failure on their side.

Bought new. Gun dates to approx. 1980, what took so long to notice it.

What doesn't make sense to me is that you've owned and carried the gun and shot it often for a "couple of years" and haven't noticed the barrel is improperly clocked, which is what I figure you mean by "over tightened". Pinned barrels can't really move once the pin is driven. Pinned barrel M66-1's are no newer than 43 years old, so the factory no longer services them.

From what I've read on some post somewhere, some pins on the barrel were just for show and actually did not penetrate the barrel to pin it down.
I would talk to some reputable smiths in your area and see what they say.

It makes sense that S&W wouldn’t work on it any longer. I learned that recently with a relook 640 .38 Special made circa 1992-94. But I don’t understand how the barrel was over tight unless the front sight was cocked to one side or the other.
