Model 66 - 6 Mountain Gun

My husband wanted a .357 mountain gun that Davidson's had with hi-viz sights. The dealer told him he could get the same gun w/o going through Davidson's. He got the .357 with hi-viz.
Now that he's picked up a few mountain guns, all of which have mountain gun written on the barrel, he's wondering if the 66-6 is really a mountain gun. It has no markings that it is a mountain gun.. It's a 4" barrel. Are all mountain guns marked on the barrel?

The factory has never made a Mountain Gun on the K frame (M66) platform/model.
The closest you will come is the L frame, which is a M686, but it is not currently in production - they only made one run of these in the late 90's.
I suspect your dealer is trying to sell you something he has in stock, rather than what you are looking for.

welcome to the Smith forum.
I believe that all but the very first 44 mtn gun do have the words "Mountian Gun" on the barrel. The only 357 mtn. gun I know of is a 686 L frame 7 shot gun. I had one but sold it. The L frame is a bit bigger frame than the K frame the 66-6 is built on. The 66-6 will be a fine gun too and he should have great service from it, though I don't believe it was ever designated a "Mountian Gun".

I can't even think of a 66 that would RESEMBLE a Mountain Gun... tapered barrel and bevelled cylinder are requirements, right?

Thank you.. He just purchased a few mountain guns and until then never really thought much of the .357 he had purchased before.
We moved to a new state and have found a very reasonable small gun shop owner. Now my husband has his want list of a .357 mountain gun and the .45 ACP mountain gun. We have done some searching on the internet to find the models for these to show the gun dealer what he is looking for!

I think there are mountain guns, and there are "mountain guns". If you want an S&W "mountain gun" that is one thing. If you simply want a gun for the mountains, depending on the wildlife the 66 could work.

Hi,

Hate to hijack this thread, but it looks like it has been sleeping for a while.

I just picked up a couple of 686 Smiths and wondered what the current market value is on them. The first is a 98% 4" 686+ Mountain Gun, like the one pictured here (no box or papers) and the other is a CS-1, 3" Custom Service gun, NIB. I just wondered what the value would be on these two. I know pictures would help, but I haven't mastered posting them yet.

Here's my track (Mountain Gun variation has no premium listed in the Blue Book of Gun Values but only 2000 were made and there should be one. The citation here is for plain 686 Plus. I'm guessing the MG premium shoul add about $100 the the BBGV range,):

Smith & Wesson 686-5 Plus Mountain Gun Revolver in .357 Magnum,.38 Special, Plus P. Bluebook of Gun Values (29th Edition) indicates between $415 in 98% condition and $565 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 26 recorded prices using local and internet sources for this gun from $475 to $1063 over a period of 2024 days ending May 31, 2008. The average price as of that date was $631. Current or last MSRP is $790.

Idahoser, For some reason, the 686+ Mtn. Gun did not feature the beveled corners on the cylinder flutes. Or, at least the 5 or 6 I've seen and the one I own do not have beveled corners.

I have a M-66-1 2 1/2" that is my idea of a "Mountain Gun". It is a handy to carry, fairly light weight, and handy revolver to have around, in a reasonably heavy caiber. It fits the bill perfectly (for me)......but it doesn't have those two words printed on the barrel.

I need a gun that fits the requirements......not some "floosy" gun, with the words on the barrel!!!!!

Didn't S&W make some Sc guns with a 3" bbl and Hi-Viz sights sometime around 2002-2003. If memory serves, they made some in .357 and .44 Spl. They were a trail version of the 386PD as I remember. They were on the L frame and not the K frame, and I not sure how they were marked.

Batmann you are thinking of the Mountain Lite 386 and 396 respectively. Those are nice weapons certainly. I sold mine off to a really zealous gun show attnedee but I never had an issue.
