I have a Model 669 that originally belonged to my Dad, his service pistol on the LAPD in the 80's. If Pop shot once a year, that was too much for his liking. So the gun is still immaculate.

Here's the question. It has Pachmayr Signature Series grips on it. Was this a factory option? I can't imagine my Dad actually putting anything aftermarket on his guns, and I see a lot of these grips on M669's for sale.

The grips are in great shape too, and I have no interest in removing them. Just curious.

Hello,
I've handled several 669's over the years and only ever remember the black plastic "Delrin" checkered stocks on them. I would hazard a guess that the gun was issued to your Dad with the Pachmayr's already on it. Your Dad must have been a detective, or plainclothes LEO?. On my Dept Model 64's were issued to specialty units (Marine Unit) with finger groove Pachmayr's, where to regular Officers they got Model 10's with the standard PC checkered magna's.

Thanks for the reply. Pop was actually the Commanding Officer of a division at the time, and may very well have purchased this gun himself. I thought it might be helpful to post a picture of the gun.

I'm pretty sure that Pachmayr grips weren't a factory option on the 669, but were (and are) a popular upgrade. I bought a NOS set and put them on my 469, and absolutely love them. That's a beautiful heirloom you have there messeleven.

Here's mine.

Not to hijack the thread away from the grip question, but there was a recall on the 669 safety. Go to FirearmsID.com- An Introduction to Forensic Firearm Identification and check it out. It looks like your serial number is in the affected grouping. I bought a 669 awhile back and mine needed to go to SW for the free repair. They'll pay shipping.
Yours is a beautiful gun! Mine was a nightstand queen and is a keeper. The trigger is awesome.

Mine is a CCW piece and I installed the Uncle Mike grips.....real rubber and very slim....

I had an early one with "pebbled" grips. They changed them to "checkered" later. Pachys (and grip boots) were popular options because gripping them is kinda like grabbing a 2x4.

Based on your serial prefix you have a first year production ('85) which more than likely had the "pebble grain" grips when new, they look like these, although on a 469...they later switched to the checkered grip panels.
