Hello!

I am a new member to this forum, though I have been browsing it for a few months now. Recently, I purchased a new S&W Model 686-6. However, the gun stayed at home while I was off at college for a month and a half. Now that I have posession of it, I am noticing that the hammer seems to be hitting / rubbing the frame as it falls.

While the hammer is down, it seems to be centered well enough within the frame, however when the hammer is back it appears to be slightly to the right. When I pull the trigger and slowly let the hammer down, I can feel the hammer initially contact the side plate, and then I can feel the top corner of the hammer hit the frame and slide against it, with the friction being noticeable but not great enough to hinder the action in any way.

Here are some pictures of the problem in question.

Here you can see the wear on the top corner of the hammer as well as the front edge

My question is, I assume that Smith and Wesson will repair this issue? I believe this would very clearly fall under a defect in workmanship. I called their customer service line yesterday, and after telling the rep about the issue, he simply told me I should shoot it and see if it's a problem (I have yet to shoot it unfortunately, going this weekend!). I've tried calling them again today, but whenever I try to get to the operator it takes me back to the recorded menu options!

I would just like to get an opinion whether or not this really is an issue worth taking to S&W or if it is something I should / could fix myself? It does bother me, as I've held and inspected many smiths and none of them have had this issue, and you would hope that with the price tag new smiths have, they would come from the factory without these kind of problems.

Many thanks!

Fairly common and can be fixed with shims or just send it back.

If I send it back, do you think they'll clean up the burr on the frame caused by the steel being pushed out? Or do you think they'll just drop shims in and call it good? Im hoping the former, but I guess I could just file it myself if it was really necessary.

I would send it back if there is any question. I just did this 2 weeks ago with my new 686 for a "nick" that was interfering with the cylinder turning a few times Revolver Jam. Some suggested just filing it, but they replaced the frame completely and I'll have it back in a day or 2 (I'll update post when I get it back). Their customer service is great.
