Hello S&W Members!
I have had this revolver for quite some time and at some point installed a dot sight on it after removing the rear sight assembly.
Somehow misplacing that rear sight assembly, I am now in need of one to reinstall to enable selling.
Might anyone here know which/what the part number is, or possibly have one that I can purchase please?
I visited Brownell's and it LOOKS like it may be
Mfr Part: 223340000, listed for both 6" and 8-3/8", but it seems that it is longer than the one that I currently have on the 6" 686 as I can see where it ended when it was installed from the factory. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

That sight from Brownells is the wrong one. A 686 ND would have had a square tang rear sight - not the round tang shown (started with 686-4).

Unfortunately, the square tang sights are no longer available as a service part from S&W, which means you will have to find one in the secondary market: Ebay, Numrich etc.

The dimensions between the front mounting screw and rear elevation screw are not the same on all sight assemblies. Measure your dimension and insure that the replacement sight matches...

Bowen makes their excellent Rough Country rear sight in an undrilled, square tang configuration. Drill to fit your dimension (recommend a gunsmith install). Superior to a S&W sight, so , unless you are a purist, that would be the way to go. JMHO.

Thank you for your detailed reply! The one that I installed as a temporary is in fact from a 686-3 and while it fits the "Square Tang, Critical Dimension' it still falls short overall. The dimension from where I can see that it ended (close to the small 'drop' along the sight plain) and measures overall about 2.875" end to rear of the serrated/rounded section just beyond the actual notched rear sight.

Okay, a little more insight on what I believe has happened and why the 'standard' ramp assembly won't work:
I bought this revolver with a dot sight already mounted and the seller gave me the rear sight assembly at the time of sale about 15 years ago.
Fast forward to today after removing dot sight and rail mount, I could not find that rear sight assembly from the transaction so long ago.
I could recognize that the minor oil mark from the rear sight assembly was further ahead than that of the substitute assembly that I had from another donor gun, which was too short and didn't entirely cover the last tapped hole at the front of the sight assembly groove (it is just barely visible at the end).
So, I assume that the smith that tapped this revolver replaced the 'standard' rear assembly with one from a 2.5" 686, which has a longer overall dimension assembly to hide that last tapped hole, yet is the same otherwise.
THAT is the rear assembly that I need. One that is about 2.94" overall and 1.181" from center of adjusting screw to center of mounting screw.
Anyone???
Thank you!
