I purchased the Model 69 w/4 1/4 inch barrel two months ago. I have shot jacketed factory ammunition and jacketed reloads in various projectile weights. None of the reloads approach max loads and there is no indication of pressure or crimping problems. I love the weapon it shoots wonderfully and recoil is manageable. I have a few questions regarding this weapon and I solicit your comments on the issues below.

After examination of spent brass after firing I find the cases to be coated with excessive burnt powder residue. I expected this when firing lead 44 SPL cowboy loads. I have not experienced the problem to this extent with the model 10-6, Model 36, or model 60. This is, however, my first experience with magnum revolvers except for a Model 29 I owned briefly in the late 70's.

My next question is in response to an article from Hand Loader Magazine titled Handloading the New S&W L-Frame. The article indicated that leading in this handgun is probably attributed to EDM rifling and suggested that this handgun may be an excellent candidate for fire-lapping.

I must admit that this summation exceeds my level of competence and therefore yield to other members of this forum who are more technically familiar with this process. I have not experienced a leading issue but have only fired about 600 rounds through this weapon.

Ours does not lead excessively with Keith type lead bullets. Shoot it with lead and see if you get a lot of leading. If you do not then don't worry. A lot of factors go into cast bullet performance and whether or not you get leading(alloy, lubricant type, bullet fit, bullet design, and others)

Burnt powder discoloration on cases is typical when firing underpowered loads. All it means is that chamber pressures are too low to expand the brass sufficiently to completely seal the breech.
It's a cosmetic issue, not a real problem.
