Model 6906 vs Glock 26 for CCW

To answer some points, the below.

1) I have broken a few parts on S&W 3rd Generation guns, including an extractor hook. While that is a fifteen minute job with a Glock 19 (changed more than a few), it is a trip to the factory or a real armorer for the 3rd Generation. I do agree with the backup philosophy, and I have duplicates of any pistol I carry. I rather do the work myself, but an extractor change on the S&W is much more involved.

2) There are fewer holster choices for the S&W guns due to the waning demand for them, especially new holster designs. Want a Sparks Nexus with the magnetic loop closures for the 3rd Generation? No can do, but there is an offering for the Glocks. An example of just fewer options due to many shooters going for something else.

3) I agree about the weight not being an issue with a good holster and belt, but as we age, a little less weight on the belt is a good thing for the back.

6) I really like the HD sights on a carry gun, but I can and do make do with the Novak. It is just nice to have choices. With the S&W guns, there are fewer of them. The slide design lends itself to choices due to the dovetail design, but fewer companies offer sights for the guns.

7) You may be right as the 5906 magazines will work in a 6906.

Much of the above is all about the market and popularity. Glock pistols, in a word, are popular. As a result, there are lots of choices for aftermarket parts and support for the guns. One can walk into most any gun store and find Glock pistols, magazines, sights, and holsters. Not so true for the S&W 3rd Gen guns. It does not make them bad pistols, but logistics are a big part of choosing a carry gun, and S&W does not want to sell more 3rd Generation pistols.

If one has all they need, the 3rd Generation guns are viable carry pistols. One may give up some options as the ability to easily mount a light or the ability to get a SIRT, but the guns will do the job. If one is starting from scratch, the 3rd Generation guns have been superseded in the marketplace.

smithscott.........well we've shorten the list from 8 to maybe 2....LOL ...... someday I will go to a Glock.........................................if and only if.... I have to!!!!!

I'm not "starting from scratch"........

......... it may be awhile before I wear out ...... 2 PC 6906's, 2 stock 6906's, a 6904 and an all steel PC SD-9!!!!!!!

Should be able to cannibalize parts for a very very long time!!!!!

Glocks work, they will get the job done..........but they ....... as someone said in another thread........... are "soul-less chunks of molded polymer".....

in the even of TEOTWAWKI I'll pick up a couple of Glocks along the way.....

Don't like Glock, the man, or his business practices.
Don't like Glock pistols.
Do like Glock field knives and own two.
Do like Glock E-tool and plan on getting one.

Almost bought a G19. Was very close. Then, I handled the Ruger SR9.
Bought the SR9 and have no regrets.
Every bit as reliable as a Glock.
At least as accurate, if not more so.
Much better factory trigger pull.
And, the most important part, fits my hand correctly.

Do own 3rd Gens. Do like them a lot. Do plan on carrying the 6906, 5906, 5946, and 4566.

Heck, if i could get enough mags for my 52-1 (and mod them to hold 8 rounds) I'd carry it.

GWK4667, thanks for serving your country and community.
I'd like more info on buying one of your sister's holsters.
I'll have to pay the extra $10 for mine.
I can think of several pistols I can carry in that.
Does she make a left handed version?
A double-rig would be sweet, too.
Great deep-concealment rig.
Would a 4566 or 1911 Commander fit?

I do own and carry third generation S&W pistols. My number one concealed carry gun is my 3953.

This 1006 is my choice for hiking here in north Georgia. I left it ome this weekend and brought my Sig P226 .40 S&W with me, as I planned to work cutting and hauling limbs and brush.

You are welcome. I have responded to your PM, as I stated in it my sister is a lefty so I'm sure she will be able to accommodate!

I am no Glock fan, but, of the two choices listed by the OP, starting from scratch that would be my choice. Luckily for me, no need to start from scratch as I have owned a 3913NL since 1991. Since then, I have added a Novak 915, a 3906 for my daughter, 5906, and two 4046 pistols.

If I had to do it today, my choice would probably be the HK P30 and P2000SK. They may be polymer guns, but they are very, very good guns.

I knew that behind all that Glock talk........you were a great guy I'd like!!!!

The 3913NL has been my primary concealed carry since they came out..... displacing a first year 3913 ( I added a 5906 hammer for open carry).......... after my PC 6906s the 915s are my favorite hi-cap Smiths.......wouldn't mind having a Novack

I don't own a G26, but I do have a 6906 and a G19. I have been carrying the 6906 for about a month to see how I like it. I've been carrying a G19 off and on for about 19 years. The G19 is my go to because the familiarity (I shoot Glocks in IDPA and 3-gun). That's not a knock on the 6906, I wish I had discovered 3rd gen auto's years ago.

As far as Gaston Glock, yeah, he's done some shady things, but I've bought plenty of Fords and Henry Ford was far from a saint. Just saying.

It's 6906 for me. I've had Glocks before, but something about looking down a square slide always drove me nuts and I was never that accurate with them, and I like my guns like my motorcycles....with curves and metal.
Picked up a 4013 for CCW and I found I'm 50/50 on carrying either one. The grip though on the 6906 is probably the most comfortable grip I've ever tried, moreso than the M&P .40 PRO CORE I had. I have a leather Don Hume holster and the 6906 hides every bit as well as the 4013 (which is single stack). It's hard to beat a 6906, I'm finding!

Still packing a late 5906 these days, sometimes switch to a 5946 or a very special 4046.
Of the two mentioned I have had both and still have a 26, but the 6906 is a real sweet piece in its own right for all the ability to confound a potential gun grab.
Smith still makes mags for them and parts aren't hard to find ya just gotta look harder or ask BOATS.
And if I were asked, I'd take the Smith because its "different"! ;)

You do realize where you are posting your question? LOL. You are not going to find a whole lot of Glock fans on a S&W board. That said, I carry the G26. For all of the good reasons already mentioned.

More later, but grip angle, ergonomics; trigger pull, and more.

Shoot a Walther PPS or PPQ, or a FNS (I prefer my FN's in the DA/SA models like the FNP or FNX but for this discussion let's keep it to the striker guns) or an M&P to a Glock, and it should be apparent.

Plus I don't like Gaston Glock the man and his business practices, but that's my opinion and a different topic.

The Walther PPS on the other hand, is the best shooting, slimmest polymer framed single stack of all time. I'm not going to argue any dimensions or comparisons- you just have to try one IWB and see what I mean.

What he said! Lot of nice carry guns mentioned here, PPS is difficult to beat for CCW.

For the average person, I would always recommend the 6906/any TDA 3rd gen for conceal carry over a Glock, simply because they are safer pistols to carry around on a daily basis.

My thinking is that the vast majority of CC holders will never have to use their gun in a defensive situation, yet every day that you choose to carry presents the opportunity for an accidental discharge. Loading, unloading, holstering, slipping on the ice, etc - accidents happen. The Glock's short trigger and lack of a safety brings you that much closer to the possibility of an accident, IMO. Just ask Plexico Burris. ;)

TDA allows you to load the pistol with the safety engaged and firing pin locked in place, and allows you to keep it in this very secure, safe condition when you want to. You can flip the safety off when out of the house, and you still have a longer DA trigger pull vs. the very short trigger of the Glock.

I feel that both Glocks and S&W 3rd Gens are reliable weapons, and since you can still get 3rd Gen guns and parts the issue of maintenance is not that big to me. 6906's are plentiful and inexpensive right now, you could always get 2 and have a backup. :D

TercGen....... summed up a lot of my feelings about Glocks.

I tried to like the 19 and 2 26s I've had; but they didn't feel "right" in my hand or point well (for me). Finally it is easier to carry 2 spare 3913 magazines than 1 of a 26.

I've shot a few Glocks before but never owned one due to the short trigger/no manual safety. I had heard of more than one accidental discharge with a Glock just from personal acquaintances, long before I ever purchased my first handgun or the internet came along to provide other (unfortunate) examples. :o

If you are an LEO or in a situation with a greater chance of danger, I can see that a Glock would be a good choice. For the average Joe, I like the flexibility and safety of the S&W TDA 3rd Gens.

I also prefer the single-stacks for carry BAM-BAM, and also for shooting with gloves on in the Winter. My 6904 got me started on these 3rd Gens, and she rarely sees the light of day anymore, except for the odd range trip. ;)

I really like the 6906.
However, I *******ized my 5906 by putting my 6906 slide on it.
It reminds me of the Astra A100, and I like it a lot.

Unfortunately, the purist in me won out and I reinstalled 5906 slide.
They actually looked good swapped out between the two pistols, but I decided to make those two "children" legitimate again.
