Hello. Please forgive my ignorance, and I respect and appreciate any knowledge or guidance provided. I have a S&W Model 6944 9MM and I am trying to identify exactly what I have as I see "rare" being used in ads and web searches on history. I have owned this gun at least 22 years. The marking on it are TVD06## on the left side above trigger and DCS Prescott AZ on right hand side. Again appreciate any info.

Based on the third gen model list in the notable thread section here. It was a one year model and around 500 were made.
Someone much more knowledgable than me will chime in soon, Post a picture if you can.

You may have something special. The SCSW 4th Ed. shows 512+ 6944 made in 1991 with serial numbers TFB0047-0558 (TVD057x and TZB6740 observed). Also, noted is Product codes, 103124 with the 1st trigger guard and 108138, Special with the 3rd trigger guard.

The catalog lists values at 750 ANIB, 550 Exc, and 400 VG condition.

DCS Prescott AZ may refer to the Department of Child Safety.

If you can upload a picture of the SN for us, then it should be used to update the catalog.

I'm curious! Does your 6944 have a round or hooked trigger guard?

I've seen "DCS" a few times in my police marked pistol collection and have thought it to possibly stand for "Department of Correctional Services" or "Department of Court Services"

I am pretty surprised an agency would purchase that obscure of a weapon for someone. There's a chance it was a private purchase duty weapon but then it being department marked is odd.

Pictures please and any chance its for sale...

Model 6944

Yes its a round trigger guard. I'll post pics shortly. I am thinking of selling.

There were apparently 3 groups of 6944 made - I have 2 of the 3. The 512 number only reflects the first production made in June and July 1990 and designated as 1991 models (TFB0047-TFB0558)

I have TFB02xx from the first group of 512 made in June 1990 per SW with square trigger guard and Model Designation marked on slide as well as frame and "Model Number of Parts Must Agree" on slide. Product Code per SW is 103134. Ship Date is June 1990 per Roy.

A second Group of 230 units (TVD 0468-0760 not exclusive per Roy) was made in April 1993 (per SW) with Curved Trigger Guard

A third Group of unknown quantity was made in late 1992 / early 1993 with TZB prefix, also Curved Trigger Guard with Product Code 108138. I have documented s/n range including TZB674x-TZB681x (probably not exclusive).

I also have one of the 3rd Group TZB677x which SW says was produced in August 1992 and Roy says shipped Feb 1993. These did not have Model Number on outside of slide but rather on inside. Also my TZB has the later DAO design with the 3rd dummy sear release lever at rear of frame under the sight area while my TFB has the original 2 lever DAO design.

There may also have been a 4th Production Group including TZZ331x in 1993 but this could also be an extension of one of the other 1992/93 production groups.

I too would be interested in purchasing if you decide to sell.

Would be curious to know what TVD series looks like inside -

My 1990 vintage TFB is early 2 lever frame configuration like the 1990 vintage 6946 pictured while my later TZB is 3 lever like the 1998 vintage 6946.

My 1990 TFB Slide is like the 2 6946 shown with Magazine Safety plunger in slide, while my 1992 TZB has no Mag Safety plunger in slide.

My 1990 TFB has Model number and "Matching Parts" markings on Slide as per previous Picture, while my Dec 1990 TFN 6946 does not, but my Jan 1991 TFJ 6946 does and my 1992 TZB 6944 does not. (Manufacture Dates per SW)

And yes I have too many 694x pistols - but would still be interesed in a TVD 6944.
