Does anyone have any info on which recoil springs would fit in the 945 and 952 and which weights were used? Thanks a lot, really appreciate.

First, from what I saw Wolff Gunsprings doesn't have a listing for either pistol.

Second, the 945s were made in different barrel lengths. What length do you have?

Lastly, which version 952 do you have?

I'm surprised no 952 owners have chimed in yet but here's what I'll offer.

I don't have a 952 but from what I've seen in 952-2 videos it's 5" barrel & guide rod are similar to a Super 9 (& other 5" large frame 3rd Gens) which uses the same recoil spring as the 4506 wadcutter, S&W# 200710000, does.

Relatedly, I couldn't find a PN# for my 3566 Limited's recoil spring either but my testing showed the factory spring measured 15# fully compressed in it.

The 4506 wadcutter recoil spring measures 14# fully compressed in my 5" 3566, which is the same as it does in my 4506. Wolff's replacement recoil spring for this is #47314.

I use Wolff's 15# recoil spring (#47315) in my 3566.

You can buy a couple different weights to see which one your pistol works better with what you shoot in it.

Just an idea in case no one adds more.

My findings from my pistols:
52– Wolff calibration pac 8#, 9#, 10#. The 8# is marked factory weight. The others are “extra power “.
945-5” came with 14# and 18#. I am using 14# for lead wadcutters.
952-5” Factory spring weighs at 13#.

Thanks a lot for all of your help. They are both the standard 5" models.

So do you think that the 952 would use a 14 lb recoil spring for the 4506 (Wolff 47314) since no 13 lb spring is listed?

Would the 945 also use the same type of recoil spring as the 4506 (according to Kp321 this would be the 14 lb spring for wadcutters and the 18 lb spring for the 230 gr FMJ load)?

I'd suspect with commercial 9x19 ammo that would a good one to start with in the 952.

.

I don't have a 945 but I found this picture (embedded below) of one disassembled on the internet.
Smith and Wesson 945 Redux - SWAT Survival | Weapons | Tactics

Externally their slides always looked typical S&W 3rd Gen & this picture shows the innards (barrel, guide rod, recoil spring) are typical 3rd Gen also.

I do have a 845 & a 4506.

When I gave the 845 a spring refresh, after I bought it, I put a Wolff 18# (#47318) in it, which is the normal ball ammo 4506 recoil spring.

Yes, the 14# recoil spring is the wadcutter recoil spring. Use it only for light loads.

The 18# should be fine for any standard power or SAAMI (+P) power 45ACP ammo.

I have a 20# in my 4506 & 4588 but I occasionally shoot 45 Super in them.

.

PS: In fully reading the article above it said this in it about the 945 recoil spring:

"The 945 comes with two recoil springs. A 14-pound spring is installed for ball and duty ammunition, and a 12-pound spring is available for wadcutter and match loads. This is interesting, because standard weight recoil springs for the 1911 range from 16 to 18.5 pounds. Slide weight differences may be a factor."

So... 🤷🏻‍♂️

I am no expert but I will tell you that the spring installed in the 945 now (which AFAIK was not changed from the factory) is no 14-lb spring; it feels much heavier than that. I would not be surprised if it were the 18.

I only run one spring weight in my 645,745 and 945. From light 185 grain bullets to 230 hardball the Midway Smith & Wesson spring #227209 works perfectly.

This spring is extra long and can be a bit hard to install.

The biggest benefit is that it protects the frame from slide battering.

I hope that you use grease and not oil on the slide and frame to also protect the metal.

Currently this spring out of stock.

I've run this spring since 2018 and all three pistols look as good as new.

That sounds reasonable, which is what I suggested earlier & what Kp321 & Bruce51 also confirms from their use.

Midway PN# 227209 is S&W PN# 201610000 which is the same weight as Wolff PN# 47318, an 18# recoil spring.

Just for the heck of it, can you weigh your 952's slide & barrel together (no guide rod/recoil spring) & then your 945's & tell use how many ounces each pair are?

My 5" 3566TSW Limited slide/barrel weighs 18.4oz & my 845 Limited is 18.7oz.

My 4506's weighs 17.6oz while my 1006's weighs 19.7ozs, the heaviest of all my 3rd Gens.

I will have to let rimfireshooter do the honors. Both my 952 and 945 wear red dot sights, as do all my pistols I shoot regularly. 75 year old eyes need a little help!
