I stumbled across what I believe to be a Model of 1953 Kit Gun this afternoon. It is a four inch version with a flat latch, coil mainspring. It has a little blue wear on the muzzle and the edges of the cylinder flutes and similar areas, but the timing seems spot on and no signs of rust or abuse. It does not have the factory stocks, unfortunately. It does have a set of nice old Herrera.

I was able to purchase it for 600 bucks, I have been looking for a shooter grade for a while and I am very happy with it.

It has the top side plate screw and the serial number is 43xx, so it may be a first year gun or at least a very early version.

Photos will follow soon.

Pictures, we love pictures! It sounds like you've got a real find there. Although S&W got the idea quickly on the K Masterpieces after WW II, they don't seem to have gotten the 22 memo for small frames until later. There just aren't that many of them out there. Congratulations.

I've got one of these in the 2600 serial number range. Roy says it left the factory in May of 1954. Production was from 1953 to 1991

Thanks for that information, I guess S&W wasn't turning out a great number of these.

Great find, I bought one from an estate a few years back and believe it measures out to be an I frame. Best shooting .22 I own and a solid piece of
workmanship.

Here's mine - inherited from my father, who, I believe, purchased it new in 1956. I have the original stocks, box and tools.

My father was a southpaw, so he made himself a set of left-handed stocks...

I also have the LH holster he made.

Adios,
