Just shot an old model28-2 my brother bought in a gun shop in Arizona this winter for $329.00 Serial no. s246687 which puts the manufacturing date around 1964-65. Danged old thing has most of the blue wore off the barrel but, but boy she shoots like a dream. I can;t believe the prices I am seeing these go for. I told my brother he did ok. Gotta luv those old guns.

Hi
I've had several 4" Model 28-2s over the years and all of them have been great shooters. The one that still goes to the range with me has most of the blue worn off the barrel and some off the cylinder. Doesn't affect its point of aim though. My wife recently gave me one with a 6" barrel and I've only had it to the range once. But it put a box of .38s in the black with no problem.
While my favorite Smiths are K-Frame target guns, I have never been disappointed by the performance of my N-Frame .357s. I expect I will keep acquiring them as I have opportunity.
Have fun!

Mine was refinished, not very well, but good enough that I paid $370 for it. It is mechanically like new, and I got it for use, not collecting.

They are really hard to beat, and most sell for at least $500.

I've got two Model 28's. One is a 4" in great condition with box and some papers. I paid top dollar for that one. Maybe too much, but it was the first one I'd seen in years.

The other is a 6" that has a big scratch on the cylinder. I've shot both, but the 6" sees the most use. Both are good shooters. It's easy to see why everyone loved them back in the day.

The 4" especially just looks like serious medicine. :D

I have a 4" that's been nickeled and a 4" and 6" blue. Both are great shooters. A couple of friends that have shot the nickeled 4" told me that if I ever get rid of it they want it, it shoots really good.
I've also talked to 3 former LEOs who said their HPs were the best shooting revolvers they ever owned.
I've often wondered with LE agencies being the target customers for these guns did they pay special attention to them during the manufacturing process? I don't know how/if they could but their accuracy is a common subject.
I think I'll hang onto mine.

The model 28-2 is a great revolver and yes and your brother got a very good deal on it.

The worn-looking blue on the barrel is normal for a M28. It's not as shiney as the rest of it.

I have several M28s, currently a pre model 4"with alot of blue missing, like a LE model would have. A hard chromed 4" and a 6" full target. All are fun to shoot, make holsters for etc....

original 28 buyer

I bought my 4" 28 in 1973 for $120 which included 4 boxes of 357 mag ammo. I have never been sorry for that purchase. I have shot 1000's of rounds through it and it is still as tight as the day I bought it. It is currently resting in its El Paso Saddlery holster. It would be the last gun I would depart with. Model 28-ugly ducklings but beautiful swans.

They can still be found around here at " reasonable " prices .... but they are more now than when I bought mine ... not all that long ago. Don't have many guns at all but the 28 is one that I'd buy another of.
Did that come out right ??

Mine rests in a $20 Canadian Webley MKVI canvas holster on an old GI belt. Fitting, given the no-nonsense refinish and worn magnas. :D:cool:

My 28 has earned its resting spot. I originally carried it in a old Uncle Mike's holster. The El Paso holster has a fish scale pattern on it. One of these days, after a great service by your 28, you too will reward your 28.

My first duty weapon was a 28,4".Originally purchased in 1976 for $180.00,and the reason was it was the cheapest in the store and all this rookie could afford:oTurned out to be the finest weapon I had, would always qualify expert with it and carried it for 10 years.Told my "adopted" son about it several months ago,and lo and behold this weekend he presented me with a mint 6" 28-2,as an early fathers day gift:eek:Now I have had to carry a blasted glock for the past sevceral years:mad:and had almost forgotten how to shoot a revolver.Went to the range and first shot low left:oThe next 49,at 25 yards dead center to the point it looked like 12 ga.buck shot at point blank.

All of the above - I own a 28, I have seen dozens of them on this forum, I have only seen a few of them in person, but if you don't post pictures of yours here then...

I bought my 6" Blue S2461xx in almost perfect condition (1 light 1/2" scratch on Bbl) in 09? $440.00 and giggled all the way home.

Unfortunately it only had evidence of 3 chambers fired so it has seen less than 50rds. fired by me. I have a shooter 27-2 83/8" that I enjoy range time with though.
