Model28-2 HIGHWAY patrol

Delta 419...

Wow... Just wow...

That is why I always ask for pictures. Something like this pops up that I haven't yet seen and I'm blown away yet again.

Awesome.

So at the risk of being declared a heretic I have to ask the following. Who has taken a 28 with a "rough finish" and hard chromed it? I love my 28-2 and the finish is in great condition and not a candidate for a new finish; however, I still consider it to be a shooter and I do carry it.

My thought goes something like this: I consider the 28 to be a working revolver and given that a new GP 100 usually costs more than many M28s out there and is not nearly the revolver that the M28 is I think that a hard chrome finish would really add utility to the 28. I suppose one could just get a 627 or 686 but I was thinking specifically about a gem in the rough example.

I love my 28-2. It's my primary CCW :)

Neighbor had a 4' M28. That caused me to buy a 4' M27. Only difference in them is the 27 has a better finish. Both shot the same. It's a little heavy for a carry gun but that helps shooting it. Bought it about 20 years ago. See them at gun shows and they want a fortune for them.

Back in late 70s I bought a used M28 that had an Armalloy hard chrome finish on it. I've owned blued, parkerized, and stainless guns and the hard chrome on the 28 was simply the best I've ever had. It was a satin-type finish, fwiw. After years of shooting it, carrying it as my duty weapon, and cleaning it, it looked just like the day I bought it when I sold it to finance one of the just coming out 686s.

I'm looking for a shooter-grade 27, 28, or 29 in 4" trim right now. If I decide on a refinish it will be a hard-chrome.

I like where this is going. I'm going to be sending a 36 for this finish. I would love to see a 28 done in Armalloy, Metalloy, Metalife, or whatever.

I have a couple of Semi's hardchromed---like them better than stainless--and--well--nickel is for pimps, IMO, as far as pretty and durability is concerned.
Blessings

Just today, at the local gun show, I bought a 'new' Model 28-2 that looks like it has hardly ever been fired. A 6" beauty. Here are the pics (attached). The price was right and I couldn't resist the temptation. The serial number puts it in the late 70's. I think I did all right from what I read in this thread.

Thanks,

Oldgun

If I come across a four inch with really rough finish from rust or pitting, then I'm going to clean it up and send it off for a good hard chrome finish. But I bought the only 28 I have seen for sale local and its finish is pretty darn good still. I'm thinking of putting up a WTB for a functional but worn finish gun. But I only have $400 for that project and I still need to factor in the refinishing fee. But the goal is now set.

I bought my first 4" Model 28 back in 1979. It was my first and only gun for several years. One day about 20 years ago, I came across a 6" 686-1 in a gun shop for $300.00. I sold the Model 28 to buy the 686. The 686 is a great gun, and shoots great, but I always regretted selling the 28. I have been looking for another all these years, but have not been able to find another one in decent condition for a reasonable price. This past February, I was working a gun show. Sunday morning before the show opened, I was making the rounds again, and one of the really big dealers there had a Model 28-2 with a 6" barrel in awesome conditon. He must have taken it in on Saturday. It had hardy a mark on it and no significant turn ring. Since I knew the dealer, and after some negotiating, he let me have it for $375.00. The serial number puts it in 1978. I took it to the range and shot several boxes of 357 loads from it. The accuracy on this gun was amazing. It felt so good to shoot a Model 28 again after all those years. I took it home, cleaned it, and now it is sitting in my safe. It is too nice to fire. I will now have to continue on my quest for another one to use as a shooter. The next one will hopefully be a 4" if I can find one again at a reasonable price. Can one have too many Model 28s?

I love it when someone has a plan :)

Stu this is weird, I'm going through a similar situation with the exception my introduction to the 28 took place in 1968. When I moved from Brooklyn to Long Island I applied for my pistol license from Suffolk Cty. PD. The pistol range I was a member of was Tee Dee R&P Range in Medford, N.Y. and they held combat matches. Now, I need a revolver; enter the 28 w/6" bbl. The matches turned out to be very competitive; I really got into them. Several years later I took a second job in armed security just for the extra money for reloading supplies. One Saturday after work I take a ride to my new gun store/range Colonial Firearms in East Meadow (also on L.I. and also run combat matches). I was in uniform. This guy comes up to me and introduces himself; he asks if I was interested in shooting PPC competition…my eyes lit up and here it starts. I begin meeting guys from Colonial who also shoot with the association. They coach me in what equipment I need and the rules of PPC (governed by NRA rules). I begin shooting matches with the 28. The matches are all traveling matches, all over the Northeast, and as far down as Maryland. If you can afford to really travel you can go all over the country. I soon out-grew the 28 and bought two 686's; one 4" for the service gun match, and one 6" for the 1500 match…and like you, what did I do, I traded the 28 as part payment for the 686's…. dumbass should have put it away. Back to the present, I now live in Florida like yourself; you're south and I'm North Central in the Ocala area. Guys here's where it gets scary… last week I'm at a gun show in Crystal River, the first table I round the vender has…what do you think….a 28 6" lying there. I ask if I can handle it, he says yes. I put it in my hand and I was back to the past…déjà vu. The 28 is spotless. I couldn't check the serial # because of the oversized grips, it looked new. Unfortunately, I couldn't work the action because it was wire-tied. The price tag was $400. Now my mind is going mach speed; where can I get 4 bills; sell the 686's? Sell my High Standard Military Citation? Sell my 4046? I haven't used these guns in many years, and then I'm thinking how this post got started….

The guy is willing to make a deal. I will see him next weekend at the Deland gunshow and he'll take a look at what I have. I can taste the 28; but I don't want to do anything I'll regret! Confusion at its finest. Guys give some input here…Carl

Just picked this 28-2 up from my FFL yesterday. It had rubber grips on it but I only paid $350 for it. It's my first 28 but won't be my last.

I guess this is the show off your 28 thread:D.

Here is my pawn shop find. Paid $400 out the door last year. Now if I can find a Model 25-5 in 45LC for that I'll be really happy.
