Greetings. I have a new 08 610 (10mm and 40mm). Is there a difference in 10mm and 40mm moon clips? I can load the 10mm ammo with no trouble. The 40mm ammo into the clips tears me up. I know they make tools for this but....

And... how is your accuracy with the 10mm no moon clips and with the clips?

So far my accuacy is ho hum. I shoot from a sand bag rest to test the gun and go from there.

I understand differnt ammo is a factor.

I lurk.. I don't have your expertese...

Thanks for any info. God bless one and all.

I bought some RIMZ plastic clips for my older 610 - of course they don't fit but they are easy to modify. After I spent a few hours with a small hand file dressing them down I tossed them in a drawer. Which was of course filled with the correct full moon clips. Darn I have too much stuff.

Harray1,

The extractor end of the cartridges are the same, you just do not have the same leverage or a "handle" with the shorter .40 cal cases. The RIMZ 610 is probably the most durable moonclip on the market. The S&W 610's re-birth has given new life to the 'clipped revolver market. Depending on the barrel length of your revolver, it can be a great gun for competition.

I have used the RIMZ plastic moonclips in several different guns for range use. For serious competition I rely on the steel RANCH PRODUCTS moonclips. The last ones I purchased were ca. $75 per 100. You can go to Ranch Products website and then call them to order the moonclips.

Search this site for a Moon Clip loader/"Mooner"/"DeMooner". Made from a piece of 1/2" ID copper pipe for .45's, you could use smaller for the 10mm. Makes loading and unloading the clips much easier.

About the RIMZ clips...they have a "right" side up, if you use them the wrong side up they won't appear to fit. They actually fit under the rim, like rounds fit in old recessed chambers. I, too, used a file and called the company before I realized I had failed the IQ test.

I can imagine you would be having problems since a 40mm cartridge is 4 times as big as a 10mm; 1.50 inches in diameter, to be exact.

Now that is a handgun I'd like to see.

The 610 is my favorite competition gun. When loaded with Berry's 180gr round-nosed bullets, they can't be beat. Speed loading is fast and reliable with the RIMZ 610 clips. I don't think you can go wrong with that combination.

I have a S&W 646 40 moon clip gun ... I load the metal moon clips with two 2x4's ... one 2x4 as a base and one as a "tapping tool". Just set the 40 on the edge of the clip and tap it in. Workes like a champ. I have the small de-mooning tool for removal.

I can insert my 625's 45's in moon clips by hand ... not the case with 40's

I had just the opposite experience.

The 10mm and .40 moon clips load and unload easy to me. The .45's were a different story. I had to take my dremel tool and open up the grooves on the moon clips. They were so tight, I was denting the brass trying to pull them out.

augy
