Both of my revolvers are cut for moon clips, but I don't use them because I have not found a reasonable way to carry backup ammo in moon clips for carry concealed.

Has anyone solved the carry concealed/moon clip issue?

Three ideas:

Speed loader belt pouches will hold moon clips also. I would get the ones that completely enclose the clips. If you are talking moon clips for a 5 shot J frame, then a large speed loader pouch will hold two clips.

Also, the old plastic 35 mm film canisters will also work for the small J frame moon clips.

Medicine vials will also work. Longer ones will hold two clips.

My EDC is a 7 shot; the other is for hot weather and is a 5 shot. But it is pretty bulky to carry and you have to have it in something or risk unclipping some ammo or having the clip catch on something.

I use the HKS double speed loader carrier and pad the bottom with folded and taped bubble wrap to raise the rounds up so that moonclips can be picked out easily and also so the snap flap compresses the rounds into the bubble wrap to eliminate rattling.

I carry a 45 Cal revolver that uses moon clips.
I carry two half moon clips in the watch pocket of my Wranglers.

I have a Model 642 that has a cylinder that has been cut for moon clips. This used to be my EDC until I switched to my current EDC of a Model 638-1 and a Model 38-0. When carrying the Model 642, I briefly considered using one of these:

Del Fatti Leather - PMC

A bit pricey, but it looks like it would do a fine job of carrying the somewhat delicate moon clip I wanted to carry as a reload. Instead, I used a large pill bottle which I carried in the cargo pocket of my jeans and shorts. Since switching to the Bodyguards, the Model 642 has become the wife's bedside gun when I'm away from the house.

Regards,

Dave

Front pocket. Been doing it for years. Check regularly at the range. Zero issues.

As bulky as the moon clip carriers are, I'd just as soon go with a New York reload and carry my 640 Pro or (probably better) my 340PD (at about 12 ounces empty and about 16 ounces loaded).

I carry two moon clips in a horizontal case designed for a small flip phone on my belt. They fit side by side and are easy to remove. It seems to work better than having one clip stacked on the other.

I thank everyone for their suggestions. Right now I am carrying a "New York Reload" (640Pro) on a cross draw. The 686 is on my strong side.

I could move the 640 to my ankle. Which makes more sense probably. When seated in the car the strong side weapon is not accessible. The cross draw is, and probably the ankle is even more so. I will have to check.

I use Perry suspenders so weight is not an issue. (Perry suspenders attach directly to the belt and not to the pants. It takes almost all of the load off the belt.

I have an old pager case that holds 5 J frame full moon clips (3 on the bottom row, 2 on the top row). For N frame moon clips, I use Mace cases. One mace case holds three full moon clips stacked. If I am pocket carrying, I either put some loose rounds in my pocket or two or three Five Star speed loaders.

These work great:

I know this is not of moon clips...

...still, it's a good pic of how easy it would be to conceal them. With this setup, I have no trouble concealing everything under a loose shirt. Someone with a smaller girth might have more difficulty.

I have both a 627Pc and a J-Frame with moon clips. With the 627 I use a regular speed loader case at the 5 o'clock position, one loaded moon clip per side, only I carry it upside down. After unloading the spent moon clip I just bring my right hand back to the inverted speed loader case, use my thumb to pull down the velcro strap and the loaded moon clip just falls into my hand. I still have the revolver, with cylinder open in my left hand. I insert the loaded moon clip, close the cylinder and am good to go. I did 3 gun matches with my local club and practiced this, always using the inside case first. I was the only revolver out of about 30 shooters. I won't say I was faster reloading than the guys with pistols, but after a couple of years I was quite happy with my reloading with the 627.

I'm disabled and all thumbs. I do not even try to reload the J-Frame any more. I carry an ankle holster with a 3913 if I need a reload when I carry it.

Why would you want to if a speed loader is available, which I'm sure it is? Just to be quaint?

I don't anything that uses moon clips but, my 45s. I have a bunch of other calibers and have speed loaders for them. Point is I can reload my moon clip guns way faster than any of the others with speed loaders. I used to compete using speed loaders and am quite familiar with them, but they don't come close to moon clips.

All the rounds come out together every time, no knobs to twist or push, just dump em in and close the cylinder.
