S&W hasn't returned/replaced my new 2 5/8" UDR/B-W 627's Eagle grips, so I have tried a few others - the Ahrends Retro Targets from my 4" 627 Pro feel best, the Ahrends rounded no fg were next - those Eagles slurped, handfit wise. They went back due to their miserable gripframe fit - gaps everywhere. The latest are my old S&W Crimson/Ironwood Dymondwood Combats, bought in an S&W blister pack for $25 back in '02. They've been tried on every RB N-frame I have, starting with my first - a 625MG. They may have found a home:

I had to... I mean, the grip was off... it beckoned me, "John, change my trigger return spring! Lube me - I'm probably dry!". I found the proper hollow ground screwdriver in my sweaty hand... the 13# spring in my shirt pocket... the rebound spring tool (1/8" screwdriver... and the special tool I bought from Brownell's - and still can't use!). A mall bottle of Breakfree/CLP & applicator tube - a paper towel on the walnut coffee table. I started during a commercial while watching TLC's 'Hoarding: Buried Alive' - was putting the sideplate back on when it was over. Great improvement.

I also centered the front sight - it, and the rear sight, were hard to starboard. Duh? Darn, I'll have to take it to the range again - what terrible luck! It'll need an assortment of ammo, too - even though the original ribbed ('BOSS"?) hammer leaf wasn't changed. The horror? Maybe I should plan on lunch, too... what misery! Life is good - I feel quite fortunate - no, blessed - to be able to finally get the revolver I've wanted for ten+ years.

PS Those are my wimpy Montana Gold 125gr JHP plinker loads, 4.6gr Titegroup, in Starline .357M cases and Ranch Products moonclips - and Remington R38S12 158gr LHPSWC +P .38s, same clips.

Got a question for you; namely where did you find your 627 UDR? My dealer cannot come up with one from any of their distributors. I too, have wanted one ever since the first editions came out back in '99, but I refuse to pay the exorbitant prices that are being asked for the older ones. That makes the current model, like yours, a bargain, if only I could find one.

If you keep posting pictures of that thing you're going to make me want my first IL gun.
That is nice. Glad you got one you've wanted for so long.

I hope I don't get into trouble for saying this, but look on the gun auction sites. Saw 5 of them last night on just one of the sites.

They are 'allocated' - and, thus, dribble out. My local pusher, who had mine on order from a number of distributors since late January when I first heard about it's coming out, called me after 5 PM four weeks ago today to tell me it was in. I opened them up the next AM (4-3-10), bought it, and was at the club range by noon. Monday I called S&W re the ill-fitted Eagle boot grips. My pusher said both examples he got in were obviously poorly fitted. After calling all over for it, he got them from Bangers on the other side of Birmingham from me! They had reportedly only received ten.

The FEDEX ground label arrived that Friday - they picked up the grip by Monday, and S&W had it by Wednesday - over two weeks ago. I called today and was told it was likely in a bin somewhere - and he'd get me another grip by Monday - we'll see. I doubt I'll use them - but I 'paid' for them. They are cute...

I am still elated over my purchase. Just keep trying distributors - call the PC Sop, too, and ask them.

The grips on mine were slightly oversize along the back strap. I find it amazing that Smith can't find someone to make grips that fit!

Are the grips made by S&W or are they from a 3rd party (Eagle Secret Service grips)? Even, so - agree with ya and S&W QC shouldn't let it leave their premise without them fitting correctly.

With that said, my local dealer has them on order and one is now for me.
As a matter of fact, I was actually wanting the 629 version but after reading more and more on the 627 - that one will work too, as it will go well with my 640-1 5 shot .357mag.

I like the grips in the picture.
The stock grips on mine were a little too small, kind of hard to hold onto. The fit on mine were pretty good.
I am now using a set of Smith and Wesson Finger Groove Combats on mine. They look a lot like the grips pictured. I like them so far.
I am still smiling about this 627 UDR. Great to finally get something that you waited so long for.:D

Hve you tried carrying the 627 and what type of concealed carry holsters have you found?

Thanks

cal45 - I have carried mine a few times. I am using a Galco 2 slot belt holster for Large Frame Revolver. It is slanted slightly foward. The holster also fits my 629 3 inch 44 mag.
It fits the 627 really good.
Several people on this forum are looking into holsters also.

Great pictures, I own one of these myself. I'm curious as to if there are Hogue, finger grooved grips I can use- any thoughts on that?

Yes Hogue made finger groove grips that will fit these. Any N frame grip for a round butt should work.
