My second new 'Bloodwork' re-release, bought last month, came with poorly fitted Eagle boot grips. Neat - but a gap at the front and top - just like the original one last April. Like it, I called S&W - and got a ground FDEDX return label for the grips. The replacements arrived yesterday, and, unlike the original replacements for that first revolver, these fit perfectly! So, two kilobuck PC Shop revolvers - three sets of grips that didn't fit - and one that does!

Now the bad news... the grips I had on the two - the rounded non-fg Ahrends and the retro targets (below) - are both far better grip choices. I don't think the OEM Eagle boots help the CC ability of the huge 627, anyway!

So - if you have one of the 2 5/8" UDR's - and don't like the fit of those grips - they do have some which will fit - just keep trying - they were an advertised 'attribute' of the UDR's! Of course, there are other - more comfortable - grips, too.

PS The ones that left gaps... all fit my one '96 vintage N-frame, a 625-6 MG in .45 Colt, perfectly!

I have been kicking the Idea around to get a 41 magnum, but I think I am going to go for the 8 shot 357, How does that UDR shoot?

I love the 2 5/8" PC627 UDR. I must - as poor as I am, I found a way to buy a second one! Stock, it has a great trigger - and pops all primers. The first one's front sight was off - I drifted it back to center and it was within an inch at 12 - 15 yd with the rear sight centered. A couple of clicks and it was 'right on'. The second one was 'right on' as delivered. The ammo was my CC & HD ammo - Remington R38S12 +P 158gr LHPSWC. The first one got lighter Wolff springs - the second one will remain as it came - there really isn't much difference between the two. The first one is 'for play' - the second one will be for serious use - once I break it in (It doesn't need it - it's my excuse to pop away with it!).

I shoot mainly my wimpy .357M loads - and .38 plinkers. Most of my .357M's have not launched a 'real' .357 Magnum.

Oh - I sold my best revolver - a mint JM PC627 V-Comp - to fund the second UDR's purchase - yeah, I like it!

PS That CRK/Wilson Combat 'Umnumzaan' was bought in September to commemorate my first SS retirement check's deposit. Super knife - but a bit dear for me.

Very nice!

I've got a set of the Retro Targets on my 25-13. Wonderful grips!

Great thread, Stainz! I was just swapping some shoes on my brand-new 627 this morning, too -- here a couple shots:

...I love this gun but I've got an inquiry into the factory -- there are way too many blemishes in the finish -- in particular on the cylinder -- that I do not expect to see on a factory fresh gun with a $1k MSRP. You can't see them in the pictures but the gun looks like it bounced around a drawer for a while.

We'll see if they'll re-bead-blast it on their dime.

Stunning…..

I have the 629-6 version of this N Frame. The factory grips are a bit short and thin at the web of the hand. I can see the Ahrends are longer, are they also thicker at the top?

Thanks

Yes - they are quite a bit thicker at the top. The factory Eagle boot grips that these UDR revolvers ship with seem way too thin for me.

I am glad that you finally got a set that fits.
My newer model UDR grips fit fine from the factory, and the sights were on target and there were no marks on it, I guess that I lucked out.
I am using a set of original combat grips on my carry 627UDR and I really like them.:D

Neill, I felt the same way about my UDR. Looked like it wasn't cared for too well during it's construction.

Wow - sorry about the blemishes. My two UDR's were fine, except for the poorly fitted grips. The first one had it's front dovetail sight all the way over - centering it and the rear sight got them almost 'on the money' - the second one was spot on (158gr LHPSWC +P Remington's - R38S12). Blemishes, however - who do they think they are... Ruger?

The retro targets look 'more appropriate' - the OEM Eagle boots, now that I have a decent pair, are just too small/thin.

I handled one of those 627s yesterday at a local shop and was surprised with just how skinny the factory Eagle grips are! I have some 12-14 year old Eagle Secret Service grips that have a much fuller and rounder profile than the ones on the new Performance Center guns.

That said, it was a very slick revolver and it the first of the the new S&Ws to really tempt me into spending that kind of money on a IL gun.
