More on the FAA and flight safety

I recommend they plant those analysts in a control center so they can see just what they deal with. Perhaps they might understand the Ident' is more than just a blip...there are souls onboard.

We were on a flight into Orlando Monday on our way to the Caribbean, and we got pulled off a descent 100 feet above the ground BECAUSE THERE WAS ANOTHER PLANE ON THE RUNAWAY (acc. to the pilot) - same as the SWA/FedEx situation last weekend.

I was irritated.

Don't try that at a "hot and high" airport.
 
That's the FAA, for sure. In 1o82-83 I worked for the FAA as an ATCS (controller) at Edwards RAPCON (an FAA facility, not Air Force, although we primarily handled military traffic). We covered a huge area, and had numerous radars linked through a computer system, with only one remaining ARTS III radar left right at Edwards AFB. That was the only "raw raw" radar left serving the facility, and the only one showing a primary target (not just a computer generated target and data block). It was scheduled to be decommissioned, which would disable the only remaining Precision Approach Radar in Southern California. All of our controllers objected to that, but that fell on deaf bureaucratic ears. Late one winter night, during a massive storm, every airport in SOCAL had gone below minimums, including us, and we got an urgent call from Flight Service that a flight of 100+F-4s from George AFB were stuck in the weather with nowhere to go and no tankers available. We got all of them safely on the ground using PAR approaches. Of course, three days later, right on schedule, the ARTS III radar was devomissioned, and we could no longer provide those zero-zero approaches.
 
ADS-B and no primary radar? What's next - eliminate all the VORs and VORTACs? It's a bit scary how reliant we're becoming on GPS satellites. If we had a major conflict with China, and they destroyed all of our GPS satellites, at that point we'd have no aviation system for years in the future. And printed road maps would be like gold.
 
It's only going to get worse at the FAA. The FAA's last permanent director quit. President Biden has nominated Phillip Washington. His resume is a cruel joke. Expelled from high school on the south side of Chicago, he enlisted in the Army, served his 20 years and mustered out as a non-comm. Denver's bus system was his next government job, followed by Los Angeles's bus system where he dodged serious corruption allegations long enough to land a job as director of Denver's airport. He served on Biden's transition team and now has gained this political appointment to the FAA. Despite filling in a seriously important identity politics check box, his lackluster aviation resume is so bad it has given Democrats pause, causing his nomination to slow walked through the last Congress and expire. All of the recent transportation crises have focused attention on Dept of Transportation and FAA competency, eroding Biden's political capital to ram through another marginally qualified administrator. Patronage is fine for ambassador positions, but bureaucracies with real time health and safety responsibility need experienced expertise. I doubt Mr. Washington knows the difference between a VOR and a VORTAC, nor why a 5G spectrum threatens radar altimeters. Maybe he does and can elaborate on same in his confirmation hearing.
 
Wait till Biden's Diversity, Inclusion and Equity "DIE" mandates hit the airline industry. He wants to put unqualified and inept individuals into pilots' seats. This will, of course, be extended throughout the system. The carnage this wrecks will be epic.
 
Really has nothing to do with original intent of this thread other than line pilots and the lack of proper rest periods.

My wife and I are headed a couple thousand miles south on a red eye tonight departing @ 2300. Sure hope it isn't a last leg of a turn around. I'm not what you would call a comfortable passenger when riding in the back...
