A while back picked up a beautiful 625 mountain gun in 45 colt….set up for 45acp moon clips, Magnaport and an incredible set of Spegel grips. Anyway just picked up a 686-5 + 357 mountain gun. I'm hoping some holsters will work on the L frame. Anyone out there tote a mountain gun regularly and have a recommendation? Should pick up the L frame tomorrow and hoping my Sparks PMK and Kramer rigs are close enough. I'll get some pics for y'all.
Cheers,
Derek

686+ sounds like the perfect mountain gun. I don't have one but now I want one. I didn't realize the 686 came in that configuration. Congrats on a cool gun.

I use to have a Don Hume H726 for my 686 that like quite a bit but they only make it for autos now, you got me why. Base on that I'd suggest an H721 if you want a thumb break or H721OT if you prefer no thumb break, but for an open top I'd lean to a Kramer Belt Scabbard in horsehide for OWB or IWB #2 for IWB

Since the mountain gun has a smaller barrel profile and the same diameter cylinder as the other L frames it should fit in any L frame holster, it will fit in an N frame holster but loosely.
K frames have a smaller cylinder diameter but if you have any try them.

Ps the 686-5+ MG is tied as my favorite L frame with the 686-4+.

I found a MG barrel and my buddy mated it to a 686-4+ frame...dream gun

Nice Catch!! The 686-5 Mountain gun is the best practical 357 made, IMHO.
If it had been available earlier, I wouldn't be surprised if Skeeter Skelton, Elmer Keith, and Bill Jordan packed it as their favorite 357 :) PICS! Now you can hunt for a 617 Mountain Gun as its companion.

They made a 617 Mountain Gun?????? WOW, great…now I have another gun to look for!!!!!

Here are some pics. New to me 357 up top. Love the Spegel grips and gold bead front sight….already have the front sight, going to call Mr. Spegel Monday or Tuesday to get on the list for these grips.

I have several Mountain Guns and an original Mountain Revolver, all 44 mag or 45 Colt. Was your .45 Colt factory Magnaported?

I primarily carry mine in a Galco Alaskan chest rig.

I think the Magnaport was done after the fact-I was not the original owner and honestly wouldn't have done it. But everything else about it was just what I wanted so I decided to live with it. Sometimes the Spegel grips are swapped out for Nill-Griffe grips. Quality grips/stocks that I don't see much about.

Yea, I wouldn't have had it done to mine either. Although I bought it brand new from an LGS already ported, the product code doesn't support factory porting. I snagged it because I love MGs, the .45 Colt and didn't know when I'd stumble upon another. I've learned to live with it.

Porting???

Many years ago when I was first getting started in shooting and revolvers, I had a 625-5" bbl. Magnaported. I now understand that most 45 ACP ammo isn't hot enough to make much use of the ports. Unfortunately, it's not easy to undo the mistake. I decided to load 460 Rowland ammo just for the ported gun. The ports do have some effect with hot-loaded ammo.

Try some hot loads.

Since we're on the subject of MGs, anyone heard of 657 MG? and what does it trade for these days? I heard/rumor 657 MG are extremely hard to come by, and have never seen one so far.

Yes, I passed on one a couple years because it had the MIM parts, oversized cylinder stop lug and frame mounted fire pin. I know it's petty, but I like what I like.

They wanted $1499
