Mountain Guns

Those are the two .357 Magnum revolvers that I would like to see most from Smith and Wesson. A tapered barrel, brushed stainless 627 would be my idea of the ultimate full size .357, and the 686 Mountain Gun is the most practical adj. sight, mid size .357 of all time in my mind. I'm honestly amazed that we have not seen this yet.

A three inch 619 would be sweet to see as well.

I am huge MG fan, but I prefer mine in .44 mag and .45 Colt. However, if they had made a 686-4 plus, I would've been all over it.

I'd love S&W to make a 627MG, but I don't think they will. It would be just about the same weight as a Pro, both with 4" barrels. I carry my 627PC 5" in the same way, though I own a 629MG. Most of the danger around here (I do live in mountains) is with cougars and black bear, and I think 8x180gr with quicker follow up shots is better than 6x240gr (300gr from a MG is pretty abusive).

What about the 627 Pro series? 8 shot with a tapered barrel, and cut for moon clips. Not officially a MG, but...
I've had mine for 10+ years, and it's been a really fine shooter. When I was working it was one of my duty weapons, especially when on Mounted Patrol. I had some pics, but can't find them at the moment.

I did have a 686+ MG for a while, but sold it when thinning the herd.

I always wanted one of the Springfield Armory Comm MGs in 45 ACP, but never found one...

Another "I wish" Mountain Gun thread. Always
a popular thread. Always a popular Revolver.

Come on Smith & Wesson if your listening, please
make MGs in 41mag, 44mag, and 45Colt.

Thank you

I just traded a 657 MG on Friday for a 16-4. The gun store I traded with is Classic Firearms in Macon, Ga. The gun I traded was complete with box, pre lock 4". Call the store and ask for Buddy. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing about your S&W 657 MG
trade in.

That is the next Revolver I'm getting, but because
I'm so picky I will only buy if I can Inspect and
look the Owner in the eyes.

Thank you again.

I'm puzzled by the request for square butt frames. You can always put square butt conversion grips on a round butt but those of us with small hands don't get a natural grip on square butt. S&W won't make both these days.

You mean like this? Both revolvers are round butted, I fitted the square magnas to the stainless one.

Skeeter campaigned for S&W to produce only round butt frames using the conversion stocks argument. I guess they finally heard him. From beyond the grave!

How did you fit the square magnas to the rb frame.

I fit a spacer to one side of the square stocks. I should have filled in the front strap also. It would be necessary if I did not use a grip adapter.

I'm in the Square butt frame camp for bigger revolvers with 4" barrels or longer. Round butt to square butt grips will never look as good in my opinion. RB's should be reserved for smaller frames or snub nosed guns

All the revolvers that S&W sold as Mountain Guns had 4" barrels and round butts. If you're wishing for something else then you're not wishing for a Mountain Gun. The 1980s 4" Model 24 and 624 .44 Specials make good square butt substitutes for Mountain Guns. I don't fault you if you'd prefer one but they lack a basic Mountain Gun feature. I could write the same about various 3" revolvers. Of course since S&W decided to name automatic pistols M&P there's no guarantee they'll be consistent with the name Mountain Gun.

Unless looking at it from the rear, You'd be hard pressed to notice the difference in these round to square butt grips. -57 Mountain Gun

Original Mountain Revolver 629-2 with Herrett Jordan Troopers I had cut down just a little.
Helps tame the recoil quite a bit (as does the porting).
Have since added some more oil finish to bring out the figure.
They look a lot more like their brothers on the 4" 624 now.
Herretts had available some outrageous walnut for reasonable cost.
They are greatly missed as one of the legendary custom grip makers of all time.

I have Altamont round to square Altai's on all my L frame 44's.
They aim perfectly instinctive.
Being plywood they are not in the same class at all with Herretts but the function is A+.
The shape is very much like a Jerry Miculek.
