Hello Guys, I spend all of my time over in the Old Wheel Gun Section of the Forum, but this morning, my friends at my favorite gun shop talked me into this S&W .22 rifle. They said they found it in the back unopened and didn't realize there was one left. Just brought it home and I need to read up on them on this forum, but curious what you guys think of them. Pretty cool looking rifle. Thanks, keith

Keith,
welcome addition to your family....we love em.....so will you I expect.!!!!!!!!!!!!
FDE (Flat Dark Earth, the color of your furniture and mag) MOE's are very hard to find and going for BIG money on the Gunauction sites...

Now the tough part is finding mags...at cost or close to it.?????

Congrats,
Paul

Wow! That's actually a great find! Welcome to the club. I am patiently waiting on mine to get shipped from Bud's Gun Shop. Please give us your thoughts on it once you get a chance to take it to the range. And be sure to look through the picture thread to get an idea of how different people set them up.

You're going to love your new rifle, they are truly fun to shoot. As said finding magazines is tricky now but they are around. I think the MOE version like you just bought is the best one of the series, and the FDE just looks great. I bought 5 FDE magazines just to go along with the rifle. Enjoy it and let us know what you think of it after you shoot it.
One bit of advise if I may, when cleaning your M&P15-22 be careful of the ejector as it will scratch cleaning rods. I put a plastic straw over the ejector after scratching the coating on a Dewey rod. Also pull through bore snakes work great too.

It's a crappy gun and you're not going to like it at all. I will be glad to do you a favor and take it off your hands.

Thanks much for that advice.. I am sure there is much more out there.

Very nice find. I still have yet to see any color other than black in person.

Thanks guys, are there any weak areas in the rifle that have become apparent. ?
Yes there is. I suggest you search the forum for the M&P 15-22 serial #s thread. This is how alot of us traced our mfg date to see if we have the "Bad ones". Some early ones had extractor issues. Even serious out of battery discharges. Mine in particular does not eat all types of ammo. Some are finicky. One real important note is to PROPERLY stagger the cartridges when loading the mags or the gun will jamb. Mine likes all types of CCI ammo but Federal fails constanly. I have the Dark Earth MOE.

First,Welcome to the 15-22 forum site.

No real worries about any "weak area's". S&W has a lifetime warranty and will fix and update anything they would find if you do ever have to send it in. S&W also picks up the shipping coming & going. Great CS and people to work with if you would ever have any problems. You can also call S&W with your serial number and ask about it. They have an outstanding Data base on everything made.

Read the manual front to back and inside out. Clean the weapon before firing it to get all the factory storage lube removed, then lube like the manual says. Take care as what you use to clean the weapon. It is almost all polymer and some cleaners WILL damage the "plastic" (polymer) parts. So read lables on any & all cleaning products first.

It "can" be picky with ammo. Read the manual about those not recommended for use. I got lucky and mine eats about anthing I feed it. I suggest sticking to the copper coated bullets,36gr & above and 1240+ for fps (works best in mine).

Cleaning, the straw over the ejector is "almost" a must. You don't want to bend that. Some like boresnakes, some like the "old fashion" rods & brushes for cleaning. I also clean mine after every range trip (just old school). I might also add mine shoots great. I also didn't and don't do "mag dumps" (rapid fire) getting the barrel way too hot to touch. But that's just me and I think easier on the polymer itself.

Over-all it's a sturdy little rifle and loads of fun to shoot. GREAT plinker, but by no means a target grade rifle.

Have fun and stay safe. I'm sure there will be more info to follow. This is a great forum for info and VERY friendly helping people getting started.

Congratulations. I too am a wheelgun fan and other than a couple of hunting rifles, never thought I would have a "evil black rifle." After reading about the 15/22 on this forum being so much fun etc, I bought the cheapest one Buds sold. I paid $378 plus shipping a year ago. I just looked on Buds site and now they have the same gun at $599 plus shipping. I enjoy this sucker as much as my handguns. I wish I would have bought the 15 also but this is like shooting for free compared to buy .223 ammo. Have fun!

I've never been a fan of the snakes. You're removing dirt with dirt. I use Tipton Carbon Fiber rods on everything. No worries of any scratching on the rod or bore.

Not sure what you mean by cleaning "dirt with dirt". All you have to do is wash the snake after using. Happiness is a clean snake.

I have never understood the problem that some have with Bore Snakes. I have used them for years, and they certainly have there place. Simply wash them in the sink from time to time. Maybe for some it's just seems to easy to be effective.

Congrats on great find.

You might want to check and see if they also have the pistol version stashed back somewhere. They were discontinued but do show up from time to time. I have more fun shooting it than my rifles.

Bill

Congrats on the rifle. I enjoy plinking with mine and haven't had an issue - more than 2500 rounds of various ammo.
