Can someone please explain me why exactly the Ohio State University department of public safety needs such a vehicle?

yes..for the active shooter who's mobile around campus or the shooter in the highest building.......evacuations/rescues of downed people will be needed, deployment of officers to positions will be needed....to name a few. They are fortunate to have one.

Ohio State has a strong presence in Vehicle Design. So it's quite possible that it was acquired as a test bed for new doodads that the Military wants OSU to design.

There is also the OSU/U of M feud, which some years can make the Hatfield's and McCoy's seem like pikers. I remember one year back in the 70's when Michigan beat OSU in Columbus that the Columbus PD was called out to quell the riot on High Street and had to use knee knockers to break it up. I had the good sense to stay in the dorm but one room mate wouldn't listen and end up with a technicolor bruise on one thigh that took well over a month to fade away. He also got NO sympathy at all, anytime he started whining about how much it hurt we all pointed out that he wasn't wearing a cup that night and a couple of inches would have cancelled any plans for progeny.

Dig that Maxxpro!!! woot I have a few hours in those things.... very very cool trucks.... yeah a bit of overkill, but you get a few gunfighters in there and you can pretty much take care of anyone you need too LOL...

IN all seriousness, I can see the govt needing to rid of these things, and If the university is willing to feed it, it really could make a difference... better than sheltering in place at least....

One of the problems with acquiring such hardware on the cheap is that it then becomes a " basic need " . Such that other campuses will HAVE to have one to keep up . And when one wears out , another will have to be acquired because ............. just because , it is now part of the 'departmental requirements' and will need to be budgeted in . Look at all the equipment the SWAT teams have now compared to 30 years ago .
One simple question - in all the situations involving robots used to ck suspicious packages for "bombs" - How many have actually turned out to have explosives ? Yet how many police forces have one or more robots ?

I just don't think a Campus PD requires such heavy equipment. Like georgepittenger said, it creates a need. What will be next and where does it stop? Will they eventually use those trucks for patrols?

The past unfortunately has proven multiple times what happens with militarized law enforcement The U.S are not immune against it such things

I think it is there to guard the secret stash of ammo that Homeland Security hid there...or,

This is bad news anyway you look at it. Did any of these communities or colleges ever think about how are they going to maintain these vehicles? No vehicle lift is going to be able to lift 40,000 lbs. Tires? I know they are bullet proof but what machine can change them? No one will have the machine to do it. What about the windshield? Who is going to replace it when it does get shot at? Will the roads and bridges in the country support the weight of these trucks? If most of these trucks are going to small towns, they most likely will exceed the weight rating of most bridges. So right there maintenance is going to be a huge issue and very costly. Where are they going to get the parts? These are not just Ford F350's with armor, many parts are made specifically for the military. These do not belong on the streets of the U.S..
