This may not be the correct forum for this question but it does concern the infringement part of the 2nd. I'd like to hear your experiences with this. I use one dealer to do all the transfers of firearms I buy from the internet and at times I have more than one handgun arrive at his shop for transfer. Right now I have 2 there and I'm wondering if I should just pick up one or go ahead and get both and not be concerned about the "multiple handgun purchase" form that he has to send to ATF. I can go in and buy all the ARs and AK47s he has and the ATF doesn't require a report but if I buy more than one revolver they do. Do you delay purchases or just buy what you want and not worry about the report? Thanks for your input.

I did a 2 gun transfer last year...My FFL said it's not a problem except another form...He charged me $10 additional fee on the transfer..normal is $25/gun ,total was $60 for the 2...

Mine charges $20 for transfers and the extra form costs nothing.
Thanks wolftrax.

The requirement was part of the 1968 GCA.
The idea is to catch gun runners who aren't too careful about buying in batches. If you're not buying them for resale, the net effect is you get your name on one more list and will probably hear nothing about it.
A Smith collector in OK City did get a call from BATFE after numerous multiple purchases, asking if he still had certain guns in his possession, which he did, so no big deal.
If all your multiple purchases are out of your possession in a short period, they will probably ask what you did with them.

Just be glad you live in a state that you can buy more than one handgun in a month. NJ diphead Lautenburg etc got the demorat government to pass a 1 gun a month law.

I've bought a number of handguns since the first of the year, but only one per day. I've used three primary dealers for most of my purchases...however, in some cases the purchases were not 5 days or more apart from the same dealer, he had to fill out the form. In Texas, they send a copy to the local sheriff to track, but that most of them go into the round file, according to what I have been told. I haven't been contacted or questioned (yet) by anyone other than my wife. ;)

Wow! I have never, ever heard of someone charging extra to fill out the "Multiple" purchase form. If anything, I have heard of FFLs giving a slight discount for 2 or more guns picked up at once, since it all goes on one 4473, unless you have more than 3 or 4 (whatever the current form can handle). I guess that's fine if you like your dealer and have good dealings with him otherwise...but $10 for a multiple form seems uncalled for, to me.

I will usually attempt to avoid having a multiple form filled out for one of my purchases, if it's possible. But, I have often purchased 2 or more in 1 day to either get a price break, and/or because the shop was a good distance from me, and I wasn't making another trip just to avoid the form.

Recently bought two new handguns for ccw, both guns went on one federal form and I didn't even have to do a multiple purchase form. I guess the gunshop notifies the county sheriff's office electronicaly. No additional charges and the owner of the shop even knocked down the prices on both guns. Didn't even have to wait for a NICS check since I handed them my ccw permit.

The customer has nothing to do with filling out the multiple purchase form. Many people aren't even aware of the existence of such a thing. I'm fairly certain that your shop filled out the form at some point.

When I was working at a shop, I would advise customers of this if they were buying 2 guns at once. I told them they could always buy one today, and put a deposit on the other one, and come back to pick it up in a week, if they cared about such a thing. Many were unaware of it. I guess about half would wait to pick up the second gun, and half just didn't care.

I went ahead and picked up both guns and the transfer cost $20. I think my dealer said he can do 3 transfers on one form. I'm not doing anything against the law but having the form forwarded to ATF means that these guns are registered.
I AM glad I live where I do because Texas is a more gun friendly state than most.........but not all states. Thanks for all the comments.

I would never buy more than one handgun a week. No sense flying a red flag. I've known several people that got hassled doing that.

I sent twenty or so guns (mostly handguns) from my collection to my son in another state. I used a FFL who is also a friend just to make shipping easier. It wasn't real long thereafter that two ATF agents appeared unannounced at his door to investigate whether or not he was dealing. All end amiably as guns were of a collector type, were from his father and were still in his collection...BUT...don't think for a minute that they are not watching!

In Houston buying multiple hand guns in less than 5 days, is a big red flag. The ATFE is looking at them real hard ( they think all those J frames are goint to Mexico) and there is a very good chance you will get a visit. I try my best not to do it, ever since they put 100 more agents in Houston to look around. They are doing compliance audits about every 18 months here on the dealers.

Because God knows that someone who buys 13 guns in a calendar year is a homicidal maniac, whereas the guy who buys 12 is merely a collector:) Seriously, can't we just kick NJ out of the Union?

I am picking up 4 guns that I had transferred tomorrow. Three weeks ago I picked up two that I transferred in...

These aren't exactly museum pieces (yet), but they aren't High Points either.

I am not selling them, so if the ATF wants to come see them, its OK by me. I need an excuse to show them off and BS with some one. :)

I don't see why not, NJ usually doesn't bother with the constitution anyway.

The other little mentioned twist to the 1 a month is the permits are only good for 90 days, may be extended for another 90, up to the top cop. So you have to re-apply, and pay, for backround checks every 3 to 6 handguns based on the whims of your police department. Couple all this with the police never following the 30 day limit on issuing the permits.

I'm sure the gang bangers are doing just that.
