My 1st Gun

I'd like to tell you about my first gun and to hear stories (and pics if available) of your first gun.

My first gun was a Winchester Model 67 single shot rifle in .22 Long Rifle. Mom had given my dad the rifle for Christmas, 1946. I was less than 3 months old that Christmas. I learned to first shoot on this rifle, killed a whole lot of rabbits with it as a boy, teen, and man, and Dad gave me the rifle when I turn 16 years old.

A month or so ago, I decided to take Dad's old .22 rifle to the range to do some plinking. To see if the rifle was still shooting to point of aim, I set up a target at 25 yards. I lined up the sight on the target and took my first shot (please see photo below). Do you understand why I didn't take another shot on that target?

The rifle has been a tack driver -- and still is. This rifle is a joy to shoot. Do you reckon Dad's .22 rifle is for sale?

My first gun was a Winchester model 190 semi-auto .22 rifle. My dad bought it for me [used] when I was about 14 years old.

My first was a WWII souvenir Walther PP, with holster that had the late owners name penciled inside the flap.

It was given to me by a family friend who had been an infantry officer who fought through North Africa and the Italian campaign. He took it from a Wehrmacht officer whoi, as he tolds me, "no longer needed it."

I never got to shoot it. Someone who knew I had it broke into our house and tried to steal it, and my mother immediately sold it to a pawn shop.

I never entirely forgave her for that, but I was a kid.

My first guns were an H&R single shot .20ga that never failed to outshoot dad and his buddies when hunting, taught me to make a shot count sadly that gun is long gone. And then there was the Savage/Stevens bolt action .20ga that my grandfather bought for my dad and uncle to share. Heavy, felt odd to have a bolt action shotgun, the adjustable choke was nice. I have that gun but it's only a paper weight as my stepmother lost the bolt and magazine. Thanks for starting this thread, it brings back memories of me an dad out hunting, I can't go hunting without seeing his face and remembering him.

My first center fire rifle was a Universal M-1 Carbine. Externally they look like a GI M-1 and use the same ammo and mags.

But the reality is they were pot metal mag wells that wore out is a few months. Mine was at a gunsmith's shop to replace the mag well and was stolen. He replaced it with a brand new one, that I couldn't get rid of fast enough!

Since then I've had about 20 M-1 Carbines and still have a couple (and love them), but when I see an Universal I almost puke!

My first was a Sig p220 Carry. I didn't know much at the time. My criteria for purchase was that it had to be expensive and it had to be 45acp because I needed "knock down" power LOL

It wasn't possible to own a gun in NYC when I grew up but I shot Remington 513T's on my high school rifle team. Enlisting in the Army at 17, I bought my first handgun, a Colt Python, from a little gun shop in Aberdeen, MD when I went there for small arms repair training in 1959. Ser. 6306.

My brother bought me the exact same gun about 1955 or so.

My first gun was a S prefix 6" 28-2. It was originally purchased by the brother of a friend of my Dad in Taiwan in 1962. Dad bought it from him in Nov 1963, and the gun stayed at my grandparents when he got married. Grandpop scared a burglar into jumping out a second floor window with it. In the fall of '88, when I was 14,Dad and Grandpop decided I should have it because Grandpop couldn't see well enough to use it and they didn't want it stolen. I was doing my algebra homework when Dad walked in a put a shopping bag next to me on the couch. I was surprised to pull out the Highway Patrolman. I asked what he planned to do with it and he told me "it's yours". One of the best days ever.

I still have my original Highway Patrolman, plus a few more. It's still my favorite gun.

The Winchester 67 was my first gun too. Dad, who only had one eye, taught me, my sister and 2 brothers how to handle a gun with it. Amazing how fast 4 kids can go through a box of 22 shells in a single shot 22, and while Dad made sure we all shot the same number of shots, 10 were his. My second son now has that 22 in Az.

My first gun, was a .410 single shot with about 2" cut off the barrel. Neighborhood kid had fired it with mud in the barrel, so his Dad cut the split off. I gave him $15 for it, money I got from mowing yards.

My first handgun was a few years later, a Ruger MKI 22LR. I shot the PoopyDo out of that thing, until I lost my job during the Carter years and had to pawn it. Never was able to go back and get it. Very sad.

I have replaced both of them now and added a few others along the way. But remembering your first is enjoyable. Thanks for the memories.

Savage/Stevens bolt action with a stainless or chrome bolt. I recall it was accurate and had a ball with it in the 60s. Think we all have some cherished memories of those days with our first guns.

My first weapon was an M16A1 rifle, my second was a M1911A1 pistol, and my third was a M60 machinegun all within a relatively short period of time.

Eventually I received an M16A2, one with and one without a M203 grenade launcher, and an M9 pistol.

At times I also had a M1200 12 ga shotgun, a .38 cal revolver, a M24 sniper rifle, MP5 machinegun, a M3 machine gun, an M2 machinegun, and a M72 rocket launcher.

Also qualified on most of the German Army basic weapons and probably carried or fired some other stuff but can't remember!

Betcha can't guess where I got them?

Although I had shot other folks weapons (relatives, friends, etc), before the above but never OWNED any of my own. These were literally the first weapons I was assigned responsibility for and were for all intent and purposes MINE. And if you don't think they were YOURS, just try losing one! LOL!

In 1971 I was 12 years old and I bought a Ruger 10/22 from my barber. I rode my bike over to his shop and paid him his asking price of $37 in a large glass jar with bills and change I had saved up. It had the steel trigger guard and butt plate and a beautiful walnut stock and I would love to buy another old one like it, the new guns with plastic and homely hardwood seem pretty cheezy in comparison.

My first gun I bought with my own money (1999) was a basic SIG P220 .45. Like an idiot I sold it, I don't have a centerfire pistol that is as accurate as that SIG was.

Funny thing, one of the main reasons I bought it was my girlfriend's violently overprotective older brother who outweighed me by a good 100lbs...I was a Marine at the time too, didn't matter. Naturally the girl wasn't worth the hassle, but I kept the gun for nearly 15 years...

Not nearly as cool as some here, but you have to start somewhere.

My first gun was a new model S&W model 17 which I paid $135.00 for, my second was a 6" model 27 which became my first carry gun and my third was a 4" model 19 which I paid $175.00 for and it became my third carry gun. Still have all three and now others. Not bad huh?

The first guns I actually fired were the "family guns" namely a Montgomery Wards "Western Field" .22 single shot, which was made by Mossberg, and an ancient H&R single shot 12 gauge. The rifle was my father's "chicken gun". He'd use it to shoot a chicken from the flock for dinner from the back porch. He always made a head shot. But the very first I could call my own was a Remington 550-1 .22 semi-auto I got for Christmas when I was about 10 or 11. For some stupid reason I sold it about 25 years ago.

My first gun was a new 870 Express 12 ga. I bought when I turned 18.
My first rifle was a 1968 Marlin 336 in .30-30 for $150, great shooting condition.
My first pistol was a 1983 4" 64-3 for $120.

These prices are fairly recent, as I'm only 25.

I have bigger and better rifles, but the .30-30 is still my favorite. The 64 doesn't get much holster time anymore, but it taught me to believe the K-frame is the best pistol ever. My only shotgun, the 870 is the old workhorse; which is why I bought it.

My first was a Ithaca M49 single shot .22 LR. My second was my granddaddy's Stevens .22/.410. My third was a Navy Arms .58 Zouave muzzleloader. My fourth was a 28 gauge muzzle loading single shot shotgun from Dixie Gun Works. I received all 4 from August to December 1969, the year I turned 15. Still have the Ithaca, the Stevens and the DGW shotgun too.

My first was a T/C Renegade in .54 cal. I was 17 and because it wasn't classified as a "firearm" I could buy one!

My first centerfire a few years later was a 6" 686-1. Still have it!

When I was 11 my grandfather gave me a "previously owned" Winchester Model 41 single shot bolt action .410 shotgun. Shoots the 2 1/2 shells, took many gray squirrels ,rabbits and a few quail and ruffled grouse.
With a slug , my first deer with it. Still have the gun,it will never be sold.

I never owned a firearm until my best friend took me rabbit hunting. He let me use one of his Winchester 63's. His dad gave him two of them. Well that got me hooked, the very next week I went out an bought my first Winchester 63 for $90, still have it.

My first handgun was a Pre Model 27, 6 1/2" Bbl. gold box, papers etc. Paid $100 for that one and like a fool sold it some years later.

I begged my dad for a .22 rifle for Christmas when I was 11. Christmas morning I could tell there was no rifle under the tree, I did my best to open what presents there were but I bet I didn't exactly project enthusiasm. After everything was unwrapped my dad innocently asked us what that was leaning up against the TV in the corner ? A brand new Winchester model 67A boy's rifle ! I have care of it today but it belongs to my son who got it the Christmas he was 11 without any evil tricks (although going from utter depression to pure joy was exhilarating).

Birdgun, I have the 67 Winchester in my safe that was the first gun I ever shot. Dad bought it in 1936 for $6. He gave it to me shortly before he past away. If i get out to shoot this weekend I'll post a pic or two. It shoots exactly the way yours does.

A Remington 512 - tube fed BA .22. It was my grandfathers and I think he got it in the late 1940s. He taught me to shoot and left it to me in his Will when he passed away when I was 12 (48 years ago).

It is sitting in a safe about 5 feet away from me! I can shoot better with it over open sights than any other scoped gun.

growing up here in the hills of Kentucky there were always guns standing in a corner somewhere near by, I don't even remember witch gun I shot first, probably a 410 single shot,

but my first gun that was mine, is a old stevens 311a 16ga double,

it sits in my safe's today with many guns that are worth a lot more money,

but none that I value more!

My first shotgun was an old Savage 12 ga. SBS. I was 14 at the time. My first rifle was an 1895 Mauser carbine in 7x57 for $8.00 from Golden State Arms in CA. I was 12. Even though I had a BB gun, my father made me disable it since he thought they were too dangerous because a friend of his' son lost an eye in a BB gun war. He felt that no kid would dare to abuse a 'real' gun in that fashion. My first handgun was an old surplus S&W 38 SPL at age 16. I have carried a handgun since then. Weird laws we had in those days--I could get a handgun permit at 16, but could not purchase handgun ammo til age 21. BTW For you handloaders, we had to get a powder permit at age 16 that also allowed you to buy dynamite.
