ElToro, nice 66. I think you will find that the sights are stainless steel like the rest of the gun. I really like the look of the early 66's with the stainless sights but I think they would be a challenge in bright sunlight.

your right. i meant stainless. if i could find a 2.5 or 3 inch with black sights to replace this one, i would. this one has been worked over as the action is way too slick for fatory

19-3

Here is a picture of my 19-3 that i bought two weeks ago. It's not nickel or stainless steel. I was told that the finish is called metallite.

I would first consider the collector value before I replace those sights, or at least keep these when they come off. It is not too unusual to see the SS sights on the 4" models, which were produced before the 2.5", but a gun like yours is very unusual. :)

A very nice revolver. It appears that the original trigger and hammer were replaced with a case hardened target hammer and a later style combat trigger. If your revolver had the original first version stainless hammer and trigger it may have suffered from galling. The later stainless guns had a flash chromed trigger and hammer to prevent the galling problem.

The 2 1/2 inch Model 66 was the "grail gun" for every cop back in the 70s. I lusted for one for off duty and finally found one after a two year wait. I foolishly sold it but found a 1975 no dash to replace it a few years ago. You will find it to be very accurate and easy to carry.

The rear sight looks like it may have come off a 4". It appears to be a short one. It does not look like the front end of the sight is even with the front of the frame where the barrel screws in. Not uncommon for guys to swap sights. I did it for a while on my 2.5" Mod 66.
Look at the top strap. Is there a gap between the front end of the sight and the ramp area on the barrel?
Every 2.5" I've seen there's no gap between the rear sight and the barrel. The rear sight on a 4" is about 1/8" shorter so it "steps".
I have my 2.5" Mod 66 loaned out right now but you can see the difference here between my 2.5" Mod 19-3 (left) and my 4" Mod 66-nothing (right).
Excuse the dirt on the top strap. We've been out playing in the snow and dirt.

ispcapt, your right i never noticed that. good thing i didnt pay too much. is it possible since the 2.5s only had stainless rear sights for a such short period maybe S&W only used the long ones for 4 inch guns ? i just compred it to my 4 inch 19 and its the same length.

i wasnt suggesting swapping sights, if i could find a newer 2.5 or 3 inch 66 with black sights id buy that gun and consider selling this one.

thanks
Tim

Here's my...

...66-1. It has the black sights. It also wears Hogue's for carry purposes. Those are the original Magnas on it for it's picture.

I guess it would be possible that someone asked S&W to ship one with a SS rear sight on special order.
My 2.5" Mod 66 was one of the first of 3 to leave S&W. I was good friends with an FBI agent who was in really tight with S&W execs. He got 3 of the first ones to leave S&W. I got one of his 3 and a local cop got the other one. The sight on my 2.5" 66 is the longer blued style.

Hi all,

Beautiful photos guys! I will take some photos this weekend of my new to me 66-1/-2. It has an interesting history.....

I fired the weapon yesterday at the range to check the sights/fucntion. It was the first time I had fired a S&W revolver at a combat target in about 15+ years. Wow, did it shoot well and it was extremely accurate for a short barrel revolver. It really made me realize why I love the DAK triggers on my Sig duty guns so much...

I'm now shopping for some new grips to suit me...and a OWB holster as well...

Take care,

JJ
