i have recently tried to tune the trigger on my 52-2. i did minor sear polishing with Arkansas oilstone, but on reassembly, the hammer now drops onto the half-cock all the time.
anybody know how to sort this out?
My beloved 52-2 is presently not a shooter, and I am feeling stupid - can't believe such minor work caused such a major problem.
perhaps I have re-assembled something out of place?
how fussy is the re-assembly sequence?
anybody know how to help me please?
is there a gunsmith link to this forum when somebody really needs good advice?
I am in South Africa, so no hope of sending pistol back to S&W.

You have committed a common error: doing trigger work yourself.

Find a competent gunsmith. Tell him what you did.

Let the gunsmith fix your pistol.

You almost certainly need some new parts properly fitted.

No matter how simple it seems, no matter how many u-tube videos suggest otherwise, trigger work is for professionals: not DIYS jobs.

Just my opinion, of course.

You probably over polished the sear or rounded the edge. Will most likely have to replace it.

I just cringe every time someone opens up an M52 and tries to make it better than what it was in the first place; perfection.

A new hammer is possible to find, good luck.

The problem is most likely that you have re-assembled something incorrectly. I have had this happen to me a couple of times when I installed the sear out of place. I would tear it down and start over. Minor sear work should not cause this unless the sear was already well worn to begin with.

Working on the trigger of a model 52 or even a model 41 is reserved for the best of the best at the factory and no way will you get it fixed without a lot of trial and error by a competent gunsmith or just bite the bullet and send it back to the guys that made it. Kinda like paying for a speeding ticket... consider the cost and tiime involved as your fine so you wont do it again....

Try what Bluebellyyankee suggested: start over and re-assemble the pistol carefully, paying close attention to the position of the sear and other internals. Here's a link for a schematic exploded drawing for the 52-2...it might help:

Your idea of "polishing" may be different than mine. Still, I wouldn't get close to a 52-2's sear or hammer ledges with any kind of stone. My one and only experience attempting this kind of foolishness turned out badly; a DIY "trigger job" on an old 1911 resulted in a gun that went full auto at the range.

When you say it drops to half cock, does this happen when you work the slide, pull the trigger or manually cock the hammer?

thanks, but I seem to think a bit like you.
I am quite sure I did minor changes, and assembly could well be the issue. I appreciate your comment that you might have got it wrong yourself, it gives me hope. I will let you know. many thanks for the S&W commradarie. shaun Johannesburg
