My 586 project is finally done! **WARNING - S&W Purists may want to skip this**

I won't lie.

I was scared for a minute.

I had visions of Duracoat in crazy colors, holes drilled near the muzzle, strangely colored laminate grips over a round butt, jeweling or engine turning everywhere, and other such atrocities...

I'm glad I was wrong!!! :D

None of that nonsense on one of my firearms.
I just thought I'd warn the purists away.
Because of the new MIM part, removal of a patridge sight, the barrel, and I've read several posts where people bemoan a re-blue and assure the culprit that they have just ruined their firearm, all while wasting their money. :D

After committing all of these dastardly deeds against my gun at the same time, I was afraid it would be enough to stop a few hearts. :D

That being said, I LOVE my new old 586, and I'd do it all again, too.
There, I said it! :D :D

At the factory, it got a MIM:eek: Cylinder Stop, and a new Oversized Hand.
So now my AAA No-dash has MIM, a new style barrel, and a re-blue (the horror! :D).

Ohhh man, that MIM part made your 586 worth -$100 according to some people. In fact I'm pretty sure it will explode on its first trip back to the range. I'll do you a favor, since I'm such a generous guy and I feel really bad that you spent all the money on a now worthless hunk of metal, I'll give you $50 for it.;)

I know you're speechless because of my generosity:p

Did you go standard blue or high blue? And what did replacing the cylinder stop repair?

Standard blue.
The cylinder stop and the oversized hand were to fix excessive play in the cylinder. The cylinder locks up tight as a drum now.:)

I must have missed something. what not just buy a 4in with a red ramp in the first place. would have to be less money than going the route you did. that tall patridge sight that was on it are great for 100yd shooting.

This must be a new record - it took 31 posts for a nay-sayer to show up.

P.S.
See posts 19 and 29. ;)

It seems that some of the IPSC and Steel Challenge shooters have found that the MIM bolts are actually better than the old style. So if you run the revolver hard it'll probably help. If not, you can use it for the controversy. Minutes of entertainment...

Spending to(o) much money on a gun is fun!

Yes, it can be. It depends on - among other things - how much entertainment can be obtained from the financial worry-warts. :D

I have an old Model 29 that some idiot misrepresented so badly when he sold it to me that I was nearly furious with him, so I delayed calling him to send it back until I was sure I could be civil. By that time, I had taken a shine to the poor old thing and kind of felt sorry for it. It is now the proverbial "$1200 gun worth maybe $500," but its a pretty gun - Keith Brown stocks and all. When someone wants to see a 4-inch 44 Magnum, it is the one I pull out.

I guess your feet can either dance to that kind of music... or they can't. ;)

I had my 586 done by Smith and your right it is too pretty to shoot. They did mine as requested in a Pinto finish for the same price as a complete blue job.

Well, I agree its a beautiful gun and obviously a very nice job by S&W. But to be the second nay-sayer, I've been collecting no-dash L frames for some years and a AAA 586 with a patridge sight is the only one I'd still like to find. (The last one or two that showed up on the auction sites went for pretty good cash.) So I will have to side with the poster above who asked if it might not have been a better idea to buy the more common 4 inch ramped-sight version. But it looks great and I'm sure shoots fine also so enjoy it. Anybody have another one they would like to trade for a CS-1?

Which does raise the obvious question: Did you have the old barrel returned? A good frame wrench and you could have a swap barrel 586...(Not recommended to be done often, but it would be kinda cool.)

Yes, I got the original barrel back, but....

I had already had the patridge swapped with a red ramp before I decided to re-barrel to 4" and I gave the original patridge sight away (another atrocity in the eyes of the purists :D).

I suppose I'll throw in my two cents... I'd keep it 6" and have the other work done, re-blue, timing and a Baughman quick draw, maybe with red ramp... I already have the 4" so a 6" would be nice. Great Job on your restoration though. Looks Great!!
