my AR10 explosed

last night i shooting and i had a big problem with my DB10 308 winch,SA I can assure you that Diamondback had nothing to do with it, it was probably an overpressure problem with a bad cartridge, the result: the bold carrier is destroyed as well as the split upper and the magazine also exploded, for the barrel I do not know my gunsmith must check, for the lower and the hand guns they are intact,
back home I tried to understand what had happened, and I redid a calibration check on the batch of cartridges that I had taken to shoot I did this check by putting them in my 308 rifle winc repeatedly and I check if the cartridges chamber well without forcing and there I found that several of these cartridges were blocking and impossible to lock normally, sign of bad calibrations according to you is this the cause of the explosion of my AR10, I think so but ..?And now I'm very sad because I have a head like a strawberry and my AR10 exploded luckily I had my glasses!!

Reloaded It's a batch of already primed casings that I received from a shooting colleague who died he was an experienced reloader he was 93 years old and had been reloading for years but perhaps senility caused him to make mistakes , now after reflection it may be a problem of crimping not strong enough

Most likely the reloaded ammo...doesn't take much to create a severe overpressure.

Years ago at a range I was walking past a guy when something hit the dirt near my foot...I look over and the guy's hand was bleeding. He had a Smith M629 which was missing nearly half its cylinder. The guy used a reload from who knows where and it blew the cylinder into pieces...some which embedded in his hand.

That could also happen if it fired out of battery (wasn't closed all the way when it fired). With the upper destroyed, it may be impossible to know what happened for sure. Glad you are (mostly) OK. Could have been worse.

If the ammo won't chamber properly in a bolt action rifle, it sure as heck won't chamber correctly in an AR10. Many, if not most AR pattern rifles will fire with the bolt out of battery. My son's AR did this with some IMI ammunition. It is imperative to only use ammo that meets SAAMI specs. AND that you keep the chamber clean so the cartridge can chamber properly.

Sorry about the destruction of your gun, but you are still lucky to have your eyes and all your body parts undamaged.
I wonder if your friend may have used Large pistol primers in these cases. Maybe a LPP and a slight out of battery firing, slam fire from the wrong primers?
Again too bad about the loss of your rifle..

It's unlikely to be a use of a large pistol primer as opposed to a large rifle primer.

Sounds like an out of battery discharge stemming from reloaded ammo that won't completely chamber.

Someone else's sized and primed .308 cases, hmm. You don't know if they are too long, only neck sized to fit his rifle or what. My wag would be an out of battery detonation caused by the mystery brass but I could be wrong. Glad you didn't get hurt. The rifle can be replaced, eyes and fingers not so much. I would have carefully fl resized the brass saving the primers to put back in the brass after checking the length.

Out of battery discharge from an improperly sized case or a squib then kB! from a no-charge load.
I suspect most of the kB!'s people attribute to overcharge, out of battery, detonation, etc are actually caused by a low/no charge round causing a barrel obstruction. It isn't the "bad" round that blows up your gun, it's the next good one.


edit: From what I am reading, an out of battery discharge with an AR is nearly impossible unless the firing pin breaks and causes a slam-fire. Pictures of the suspect case would probably tell the story. If the case head looks more or less normal, it wasn't an out of battery failure. Is the case head ruptured or ballooned? Is the primer missing, pierced, or blown out?

FWIW:

Poor crimping can cause kabooms. I've seen where bullets were set back when feeding in a semi-auto, it wasn't good.

When they set back too far you end up with a bullet in the case (past case neck). Press the loud button and it drives the bullet forward lodging it in the throat of the bbl. This causes extreme pressure spikes.

hank you for your analysis, I think that the cause is a bad recalibration of the casings, these casings already used had however been defused so in principle recalibrated before putting the new primers back but several cartridges from this "suspicious" lot did not chamber in my rifle with bolts so I strongly suspect a defect in the calibration of the exploded cartridge.

thank you for your analysis, it is true that a lack of crimping can cause this problem and these cartridges were not crimped, I do it systematically for my 223 rem, my 30-30winch and my 7.62x39 but never for my 308 winc is a mistake I won't make again

AR10 incident suite

hello to all following my incident with my AR10 I went to the gunsmith to see the damage to my weapon at first sight the barrel seems intact, the carrier too, but the base of the casing was stuck on the bowl of the striker , the magpul magazine burst and the cover of the upper is split along its length, fortunately the magazine is plastic and absorbed part of the overpressure when it broke, the rest of the casing is blocked in the chamber the armourer will extract it and check the state of it I attach photos of the parts
