My Build So Far

A little off the hook, eh?
I gravitate more towards lightweight, indestructable, practical(read:cheap) performance modifications. Sorta like the 'less is more', 'slow dowm & go faster' scheme.
Jes' sayin'.

We have probably scared him back to Mforgery.com or ARalmost.net where they are impressed with things like this :D

I'd give that a double 'like' if I could.....

I have to see if those are really websites!! :p

The purpose is an enjoyable hobby. I'm not a competition shooter, I am new to the rifle world, and I thought it might be helpful/useful for some who were in the same boat I was in a few months ago to see what options/accessories are available and what I used on my particular gun. Sure, I spent a lot and maybe for no good reason other than sheer enjoyment and learning how to basically rebuild my rifle from the ground up.

If the proverbial SHTF, then it should still provide good use for defense, hunting, bartering, etc without a "significant" loss in value

It's your gun and your money...I just find it interesting that a person "new to the rifle world" would buy a lower priced rifle, such as the OR, and then put all top of the line accessories on it. How did you pick these particular accessories? I think the OR is a good rifle, but if I was going to spend that kind of money, it wouldn't have been spent on an OR and accessories.

So, after doing this build, what did you learn? What parts were absolute must haves and how did they affect your shooting? What would you do differently if you were doing it over? And what did you find that you didn't need at all? (Hint...BCM SOPMOD extractor kit)

Did you have a seekins muzzle brake on there before, where you now have a battlecomp? If you have gone this far on the rifle but you have the CTR buttstock. I would have gone with an Ace, Sopmod or UBR. I am kinda a cheap old guy and I have the CTR. But if I had the money I would have gone with a nicer buttstock. My Sport has the factory extractor but it is enhanced and not the plain old mil-spec extractor. They may have changed them since i was in the military though.
Have you considered what you are going to run for back up sights? I have become very fond of my 45deg offsets, but I see now that they are making folding offsets. Also what sling are you using, since I went to the quick adjustable Magpul MS3 sling that converts from a 2 point to a one point and can be attached at 3 different places on my rifle that I am using it more and more. Just things to think about spending more money on.
I also am waiting for pics, I also want to see what groups that rifle will shoot.
What kind of ammo are you running and how does it perform? So many questions so few pictures....she will be a one of a kind when you are done. Keep us informed. :D

the colors dont matter, I did all of mine in extreme green. that was the enamel that I had.

At the risk of being flamed to death I just started with what seemed to be a solid base rifle, the OR, and, as budget allowed I upgraded one thing at a time. I imagine I way overspent on the rails, I have seen other very positive options form half the price. I do particularly enjoy the larue mounts on everything, the return to zero, quick detach options are really nice. I could definietly do without the grip, I find the stock grip fits my hand quite well itself.

I did use a red dot for a while but wanted something for longer range shooting, mostly at the range. The 1x just wasnt cutting it for me and the a cog is quite nice

The reason for the extractor kit is trying to resolve a problem I have with 556 FTE . 223 works without issue but 556 has FTE issues. Im sure the multiple mall ninja tacticool insults will help shake the casings loose though. Its much appreciated when I was simply trying to share my experience

It isn't a bad looking rifle and I am not going to flame you for anything. You used quality parts and made the rifle your own. Not uncommon. I am just surprised that the OR was chosen, based on the accessories.

As far as the extractor kit, like Oneyeopn, my bolt came from the factory with the o-ring and insert, so I wouldn't think the BCM kit would do anything for you there. If you are having extraction issues, was the .223 you were shooting steel cased and the 5.56 brass? If so, make sure you give the chamber a good scrubbing after using the steel cased ammo. The steel doesn't expand as well as the brass, and you will get residue in the chamber that will cause the brass cases to stick if not cleaned out.

Sounds good enough to me. Why have "Toys" if you can't play with them. :D

After looking at your first post I knew you have been spending time over at ARalmost.net. The way you posted and the information you posted were things that over there they find impressive but might have got you flamed for not starting with a Colt.

I honestly believe that you would have been better off starting with a lower cost rifle because of all the mods you have installed. It is your gun, I am sure that you will enjoy it because you built it. I understand that, I myself have built some seriously custom Mauser 98's and now a couple of MSR's. In fact one of my favorites was one that I built from all the parts that I bought and installed and after a while discovered that they didn't fit in with what I wanted out of the end product. I sold it to our preacher a month before the craziness hit. I probably could have quadrupled my money but like our preacher and he wanted it.

Just for your future knowledge this forum is a good place to be, I can't speak for everyone but I know for a fact that many of our members are here because they didn't care for the way the people are on the other main "tactical" forums. Just a year and a half ago if you posted on those forums that you bought a S&W M&P15 of any kind you couldn't finish your first post without being run out of the forum on a rail. I know I was one of them.

It is satisfying to sit back and see the reputation that the M&P15's have earned. I would like you to know that I for one am not impressed with the cost of your parts. I do like to know the parts and pieces someone has used in building their rifle. The satisfaction that they get from seeing what they could build can be very evident in their postings. You really haven't been flamed here, yes you have been teased but actually pretty mercifully compared to how your original post came across. After looking at your rifle, I would say "the force is with you" :D but now its time to put some bullets down range and practice your marksmanship skills.

Your rifle is new enough and having FTE issues with 5.56 ammo so very uncommon that I would think that warranty service would be expected. There are no outside physical dimension differences between 5.56 and .223. So having nothing but FTE's with 5.56 is really hard to understand. I am not trying to question your remarks but it does make me wonder what can really be wrong to cause you this issue. I load my ammo to 5.56 performance levels and have just never heard of this problem in any MSR of any brand.
So enjoy the forum, just remember we aren't the other guys:D :D :D

A nice setup I'm sure. Certainly wouldnt be unwelcome in my gun case. But... Seems kinda like buyin a ford focus then spending $100k giving it gold plated rims and platinum exaust. A whole lot a money for not a lot of function. If you had that much to spend why not go for some top end rare rifle and skip a do it yourself ar all together? If all that was aquired over time then kudos (minus buying an optic worth more than the rifle, wacko imo). Buying it all at once does make you kinda look like you just wanna brag to the guys on the firing line how much cooler your ar is than theirs. Extravegant waste of $. All just imo, as long as you enjoy shooting it and it doesnt become a dust collector then more power to ya.

Aside from not being able to fire the round it's designed for, that's a fantastic end product you have for yourself. But my eyes just about rolled out of my head at the claim that you posted that list with prices to help "those who might be new as well". Just what scenario were you expecting?

Hi, I am a new to AR's and want to know how to spend $4000+ on a gun. Looks like I came to the right place! I'm so glad that someone was so thoughtful to lay out exactly how to do it!

You "built" (and by built I mean replaced perfectly good parts on a complete rifle with more expensive ones) one heck of a rifle and now I know exactly what I have to spend to do it just like you!

Really?

That is a great looking rifle! However I have some bad news concerning your rifle. I don't think you are quite done spending money on it. Sorry, but I have a couple of questions for you concerning your rifle. First question- why do you have QD mount on your ACOG? I am going to go out on a limb and assume that you take it off and store it when you are not using it. Umm-if that is that case, well then here is the next question. How would you shoot it without that optic mounted since you have no BUIS? What if something happens out in the field to it and for some reason you still need to shoot- say in a SHTF scenario? You can't yell "timeout" while you go fix your gun. Just something to think about.:)

Since you seem to have the best on your rifle, and I have the same model as well, might I suggest the MI flip up HK style front sight? As for the rear sight, you absolutely need to pick up a Matech rear sight. You can send oneyeopn a PM for one of them. He sells them for around $80 to $100 each I think. Do not hold me to that number since you will have to ask him. All I know is they are nice.
My next question concerns the fact that I don't see a sling anywhere. Are you going to carry your rifle 24/7 with both hands? Sooner or later you are going to get tired so you will need a sling and the mounts. I would suggest picking up a Magpul sling from http://ottofirearms since they have the really good prices on Magpul accessories.

Now I figure that should push up your total another $200+ and I really am sorry to mention that to you. However it will be money well spent. Now here is the good news. You will now have a $5000 rifle instead of a $4800 rifle. I think that has a much better ring to it don't you?:) I want to add that I feel you should make this rifle a family heirloom. I know my 13 year son would be properly impressed if I told him that he was holding a $5000 rifle and that would make that rifle priceless!:) Sorry for the long post, I am just trying to help.
