My CS9 to DAO is back

Hi everyone.Just got my CS9 back from the Smith and Wesson Armorers yesterday.The total cost wasn't far off from the 140 originally quoted.The total with return shipping to my door was 161.50 so in retrospect the quote just didn't include return shipping charge.I put 50 rounds of varying 9mm ammunition thru it and I am very pleased with the final result.The trigger pull is actually shorter and quite smoother than the previous double action pull and is also very consistent between rounds.It is a arrangement that I am more comfortable with having the consistency and controllability similar to my revolvers and elliminating a potential problem I had with holstering my gun in single action ready to rock and roll in concealed carry mode.Another observation of note is that the hammer always appears slightly cocked even without a round chambered,hence the shorter trigger pull.If DAO is what you are looking for I would enthusiastically endorse it being done by the Smith and Wesson armorers.BTW full pictures will follow when my wife and "Photo Director" gets the time to download them............God Bless..........Mike

Thanks for the update. It sounds like they converted you to the second version of their DAO which is the 1/4 precock instead of the 1/2 precock. The only difference should be the slightly longer pull. The weight of the trigger pull should be about the same in both versions. My 4046 is the first version of the DAO and I figure the trigger pull at 10 lbs.

Waiting for a range report. My guess is that you will like it and that the gun is now perfect for the intended use.

Appreciate the e mail Cruiser. That was a pretty quick turn around. Have you got to shoot it yet? I guess my other big question is what is the reset like from shot to shot, do you have to let the trigger all the way out?

I am thinking the CS45 is going to be heading to Smith here before too much longer.

I put the Chief thru my version of the torture test 500 rounds of anything from 115 gr to 147 gr. ammo,both carry and range varieties.NOT ONE FTE OR FTF.The pull is short and consistent with zero slack noted in the pull.With the addition of the night sights it is dead on accurate.I couldn't be happier and will go to grab it for carry duty without a single reservation.For those considering this change,if you love DAO guns just do it.....God Bless........Mike

Thanks for keeping us updated in this very informative thread.

I am sitting here with my 4046 and the Standard Catalog second edition on my lap. When I compare the position of the trigger on your CS with the position of the trigger on my 4046 they appear to me identical. BUT on the conversions like you got they would normally have done the 1/4 cock.

On the original 1/2 cock models which included my 4046 the slide is made longer so that the hammer does not appear cocked. When S&W eliminated the longer slide they went to the 1/4 cock to hide the hammer. I guess they didn't want the cocked and locked look. Most DAO shooters seemed to prefer the first version. Your description of the trigger pull is exactly the same as how I would describe the trigger on my 4046.

I hope someone with more experience and someone who owns more 3rd generation autos will comment on this. It is quite possible that you now have a very unusual (and very fine) variation of the Chief's Special.

Thanks for the additional info Bill.If this DAO is done in the 1/2 cocked position than it is the superior way of doing things.From just looking at it you can tell the hammer is cocked; and with the previous conversion they attempted to disquise this with a longer slide.If that was the case I may well have the 1/2 cocked conversion without replacing a perfectly good near new slide.Between Big Dog Delrin Grips,the Night Sights and this DAO Conversion my CS9 is unique.If that is the case everyone who does this conversion should ask for a S+W gunsmith named Vito.After unveiling it and doing the torture test yesterday I had a few LEO's from NYPD come over to take a look at it.They all expressed the same sentiment if the CS9 looked like mine out of the box they would have picked the S+W option for carry and off duty in 9mm as opposed to the Glock.After they put a few rounds thru it they said they would have definately spent the extra $$'s and done it.BTW it is possible that the slide wasn't changed because of the brand new night sights.If they were to change the slide they would have to take more time taking off and mounting the night sights on the new slide.Either which way the cocked hammer does give it character........All the best and God Bless.....Mike
