Newbie here so I warn you I will most likely have some dumb questions but please bear with me. I just got my first AR and it is the M&P 15 Sport. I haven't had the chance to get to the range with the sub freezing temps but can't wait to do so. I am going to use this for my varmint and coyote gun. I am wanting to put a scope on it and was wondering with the fixed front sight do you scope shooters notice it in your sight window? I have read a few posts that say it's not really an issue being as your point of focus is down range and not close up.

Welcome aboard! Congrats on your new 15-Sport.

Newbie here so I warn you I will most likely have some dumb questions but please bear with me.

If you have any questions, just ask. No one starts out with every bit of knowledge.

As far as a telescopic sight, I only mounted one to my 15-Sport and shot with it one time. I really don't remember the front sight post interfering with the sight picture. I'll defer to the more experienced scope shooters on this one.

Only dumb question is the question not asked. As for the scope I don't remember when I had one on my MOE but don't remember it being so.

And a warm

from "wild and wonderful " West Virginia at least that's what they tell us.

Welcome and congrats on the Sport. These days I'm a red dot guy, but have used scopes in the past. If you're mounting a scope with 3X or higher, the front sight won't appear in your sight picture. Makes no sense, I know, but because of the magnification, the focal point is in front of the front sight.

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

PS... there are a couple threads that address this at length that you may find helpful.

You don't see the front post at 3X or above with a scope. It doesn't bother me if I'm using a red dot.

Welcome aboard.

Any magnification above 3 will make the front sight post disappear. I wish I'd have known about that phenomenon when I was married to my first ex wife. I would have gotten myself a prescription for 3X eyeglasses for when her mother would come to visit.

Thanks for the welcomes and the front sight info. I am looking forward to learning all I can from y'all and can't wait to out some rounds down range.

Welcome aboard. :)

No worries about a "normal" rifle scope and your front sight being in the sight picture. It's too close and you shouldn't even notice it's "shadow". I'd recommend a quick attach mount so if you would have a scope failure (stuff happens),you could detach it quick and go to your iron sights (BUIS). The next "fun" thing is getting scope mounts and/or using a riser(s) so the rear of the scope will sit over the top of your rear (stock fold down) BUIS. That is so you will get the proper eye relief looking through your scope. ...all kinds of fun things to learn :) :) :)

Now a red dot scope is a whole different story.

Maddmax, do you know of the right scope mount and/or riser I would need? Or would I just be better off to get my scope then head to the lgs and have it fitted?

Suggest a one piece mount designed for an AR platform. In addition to being the correct hieght, the mount will help you to push the scope forward on the reciever to get the right eye relief. Lots to choose from... Dime store Primary Arms, mid-priced Burris, high-dollar LaRue are just to name a few.

Your optic does not even 'see' until about 5ft out in front of it. The front sight post will not interfere in any way. You will be good to go.

For a 3x9x40 scope (Standard size) you should be fine with medium height rings, or low rise see thru rings. For actual hunting, I rather use a rifle scope vs. the AR scopes of various designs. Nikon has a scope specifically for the 223 in a 3x9, it's a very good way to go for about $180. You won't need more optic, and it will transfer over to any standard rifle; many AR specific Picatinny base optics will not clear a bolt chamber correctly. Go with rings and a scope for hunting, and for precision shooting.
Acog is for a different style of shooting, more dynamic in nature.

All depends on what kind of scope you get and it's bell size (40 50). I have different scopes on some of my MSR's and they have different height mounts. I'd go to your LGS and have it fitted.

I like keeping mine as close to the rail as I can.

On another note I ALWAYS keep the mount(s) on the upper and off the handguard.

I am most likely going with a 4-12x44 Vortex Crossfire II and it will definitely go on the upper and not the rail.

I have the Nikon P-223 scope on my sport is a 3X9X40,and I used the Nikon P-Series two piece rings. I have $250 in all, and can not see the front sight post at all.

I'm just really stuck between the Nikon p 223 4-12x40 with free scope mount for $199.00 at Cabelas or the Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x44 and having to buy a scope mount $169.00 for the Vortex. The sucky part is the nikon is on back order for the 4-12 power I want.

Not to confuse the issue.............post#34................

Scoping things out

Under $225 complete.

Vortex also makes the crossfire ll with a illuminated reticle(V-BRITE MOA) for around $200,just something to consider for low light hunting.

Moe Smith did you use the regular P. E. P. R. mount? Nothing extended it anything like that just the normal mount? I'm going to try to find the specifics of your scope so I can know what size mm reticle lense I can have and still clear the flip up rear sight. Thanks for the info and pic.

Nikon's are popular... But they do make a good scope and I like they usually come with the rings. I have an M-308,but that's on a 308/ 7.62x51 and built for the heavier recoil.

Let us know what you come up with. :)

The P.E.P.R. is the standard version. I picked it up used for 40 bucks. For another 40 bucks or so you could get the quick detach. I can get the standard version off the rifle using a quarter if need be. For clarity, the flip ups are only there for WHEN the scope comes off. You will not be able to co-witness with a scope. Red dots yes, scopes, no. I can tell you that my rear Magpul BUIS flip up sight clears my scope in the down position without issue using the standard P.E.P.R. mount. Those mounts, by the way, also have the option of a rail (included) on top (as seen in my post #34) that a micro red dot can be mounted on.

Here is the Primary Arms Scope link.........

https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary-Arms-Rifle-Scopes-s/919.htm

It's an illuminated 4-16x44 on sale for $159. Down that page on the left (I believe)

Of course there are other brands available through PA also, just click on their main page and follow the link for rifle scopes.
