My First Engraved S&W

This is my first post, but I had to share my recent acquisition!

I received my Smith & Wesson Model 66-5 3" I sent to Smith & Wesson for engraving. They did Class B scrollwork and the differential refinish. I'm really pleased with the work and coverage. Turn around was about 8 weeks... Attached some preliminary pictures...

Grips are roasted birsdeye from Culina...

Congratulations! What a beautiful firearm and marvelous embellishment. The Model 66 is my everyday carry gun and a personal favorite in the K-frame product line.

I think Class B is an overlooked option with engraving. People seem to order the base grade, or go all the way to full coverage. I think your gun is a great example of "less is more". Not so little engraving to seem like you skimped, and not so much that you lose some of the details by being visually overwhelmed.

The grips are beautiful and a style (combats) which I enjoy shooting.

Now you need a nice floral carved belt and matching holster, as well as holding a BBQ where you can proudly wear and display this great gun. Let me know when and where the BBQ is...

Don't let anyone tell you that gun is "to nice to shoot". Take it out and have fun with it.

You're thinking along the same lines I was when I thought thru the project... I definitely didn't want it too "fancy" because I do plan to shoot it...

The holster is a great idea and was thinking about maybe having El Paso Saddlery make one of their 1920 "Tom Threeperson's" holsters for it...

You can call the factory and talk to a very nice lady named Roz...

But the Class B Scrollwork was $1950 and Differential Refinish was $430.

I know this is pretty pricey, but had challenges finding one of the well known engravers that was taking new commissions at all let alone the wait (which wasn't really relevant to me...)...

I did want to have it done by the Factory or one of the former Factory engravers even though I know there are many amazing engravers out there...

I think it's a smart move to have S&W do you engraving. Their work seems to increase with age.

Yes, I am very happy with the holster. Initially, it was not a good fit with the Sz. N Mountain Gun. It was perfect with my Sn. L Model 686, but I had ordered it for the Mountain Gun. There were very nice about it and accepted it back. They said they stretched it some, and the fit was then good to go.

WHAT A BEAUTY!!! A 3" 66 and some very classy engraving with an outstanding set of Kuracs.

I have a 3" 66-3 that has the exact same McGivern bead front sight. I love it. Your problem is that now that you've fancied it all up, you're not going to want to shoot it, regardless of what you say. In addition, putting it in a holster, you're going to scratch up some of that brushed/beaded finish, reducing your $430 contrast.

I am not a big fan of engraving, but that gun looks very classy like that!!!

It gives it just the right amount of unique character that makes it more special than other other one. Would make an awesome carry gun. Even though you got a pretty penny in it. Carry it with pride.

That is one gorgeous firearm! At one time, I was a card carrying member of the "If I buy it, I'm going to shoot it" fraternity, but old age has mellowed me. That gun would be put up for show only, and if I wanted to carry one of that model, I'd buy another less adorned model. Still, I understand the pride in carrying such a beautiful firearm. Think of it like the person who purchases a $100,000+ Corvette. Are they going to drive it? You bet! But often such cars aren't daily drivers, and you often see them for sale a few years later with very low mileage. If I was going to carry that gun, it would be similar to the Corvette - limited occasions.

Wouldn't change 1 thing!!! I've spent WAY too much on holsters but I love 'em. Please, don't overlook LOBO for your work, they are on here and do good fancy store bought work. NOW if you don't want anything but the best....David Keith...44special. Not store bought and it shows it. A real old world craftsman.
