I have been wanting a .44 Smith since I was a teen and ran across this used 629-6 Classic 5" at a LGS for 5 and a half bills OTD, so I pounced.

It's in great shape with not a lot of wear. The stock Hogue grips kind of gap on each side above the backstrap close to the hammer. Can't get it to fit flush. Any ideas?

Congrats on your find, and on your first N frame S&W. I have to warn you, there will be more.

N-Frames rock. My 629-6 6.5" is my favorite gun that I own.

One of my current favorite shooters is the identical gun.:)

Just a suggestion... consider buying X frame grips for it rather than messing with the ones that are on it. The recoil absorption of the X frame grips is much better and the wrap-around feature of the grips make it very pleasant to shoot.

Here is a picture of how they enclose the rear of the frame....

Congrats!!! I have the same one. I love it. Mine also has the unfluted cylinder. I have it with the X grips for shooting and nice wood grips for "show". Enjoy it.

Thanks everyone. I can't wait to get it to the range this weekend!

I will definitley order a pair. Looks like the backstrap is covered. I know I'd appreciate that when shooting the magnums. So these are the ones?

Welcome to the club, that's about the smoothest shooting sixgun you can get. Congrats

Another reminder for 629 Classic and Classic DX owners are the quick change front sight blades. Simply press the blade back toward the rear sights and carefully lift it out..

Though they tend to be pricy, S&W makes a variety of different colored front blades for these guns and they are very easy to swap for various light and use conditions.

The 5" full lug N frame is a wonderfully balanced revolver.

Congratulations on a nice purchase.

The Hogue rubber grips have an hard plastic insert. You could file it down for a better fit, but why bother. Rubber grips will wear blisters in your hand with heavy recoil, and stick to your cloths in concealment. Get a good set of wood grips. You have a round butt pistol, but you can get round-square adapter grips. I think square butt grips give a little better support for barrel lengths greater than 4". You don't need to cover the rear strap unless you have very large hands. At the same time, gaps will cause you pain in short order.

I put Ahrends Tactical grips on a 6" 629 and Ahrends Retro Combat grips on a 4" 29. Both have finger grooves. They look and feel great, even after 50 or more rounds in a session.

And this is exactly what I did. I liked the feel of the Hogues, so I bought a set of Hogue cocobolo combat grips. My frame must be a little different than the ones Hogue CNC machine was set to. These fit ok, but have a little issue with the flushness (?) of the backstrap that I think is coming from how the grip mates with the top semicircle of the inside frame. I might have to sand a tiny amount of wood and see how that works.

I just picked up a stainless 629 with a 3" barrel today to replace my other blued 629 Lew Horton limited edition that I blew up.

I have a 5" 629-3 Classic DX and a 6.5" -4 Classic. Both shoot great but in addition to the DX having a little nicer action, the 5" just feels "correct" for the gun's size. Now I'm drooling over 6" 629 no-dashes and -1s.

I have a 5" Classic M629-5 with the same "gappy grip" issue, which I solved with a set of smooth football conversion stocks from Kurac.

I really like the radiused cylinder. I think S&W used to do that on all their N-Frames (expert step in here please); I do know the M1917s had this feature.
