My first M&P - Shield 9mm

Got her today I am thinking I will need to make a trip to the range tomorrow.

I really love the way it feels in my hand (almost natural).

Only issue I have had was reassembly, seems the RSA is hanging up on the take down lug.

Other thing I noticed is the safety is damn near impossible to engage or disengage, is this normal when new out of the box ?

No, this is NOT normal. I have no trouble manipulating the safety with my thumb.

My safety operates just as it should - Not too loose and not too stiff. Maybe yours will need some breaking in?

I added Talon rubber grips to mine and it feels even better.

There are enough safeties on the Shield that I don't bother with the thumb safety. Besides, it adds a level of complexity you don't need in a gun fight.

Unless you like to use the safety when holstering and then snick it off once the pistol is secure in the holster. Works for me...

When putting the slide back on the frame it catches and the slide stops about 1/4" from the home position and when I finally get it to go the takedown lever snap back to the closed (locked) position.

I assume this is becasue the RSA is hitting the take down lug. I did double check to make sure the RSA was striaght and sitting level w/ the barrel and it was, so Im not sure why this is happening.

Yes I agree, my concern was with proper function of the gun, not so much "is the gun safe".

My safety lever almost requires two fingers to push at this point to engage or disengage.

Odd. Mine slides right into place when re-installing the slide. Once the take down lever is locked does the slide operate smoothly?

Yeah it took me a good 15mins to get the slide on and this is far from being my first pistol.

Yes once the slide is in place and locked it seems to function fine.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. From some of the thread writers reports, it may be the recoil spring assembly not properly seated. If you have the spring assembly inserted correctly try disassembly and just rotate your spring to see if it solves the problem.

Night sites

I'm not the OP so I don't know if he is considering night sights, but I am. Is anyone yet making night sights for the Shield? Everything I've read so far is about adapting sights for other models to the Shield.

Ameriglo makes Shield specific sites. I put the SW-345 Pro I-dots on mine recently. They are great.

I am glad the safety is very difficult to engage, as I would never use it and I do not want it going on accidentally, thereby making the gun unusable. It has an automatic firing pin block so it is not going to discharge if dropped, even if the manual safety is not engaged.

As others have said already, welcome to the growing group of individuals who are covered by a shield. I don't know about you but the 7 round mag is just too small so i purchased 2 more 8 rounders should reloads be needed.

X2 on the Talon grips. They give you a much more positive feel, easy to put on and fit like a glove. I have the rubberized version and love them.

I have the 9mm Shield and I discovered if I place the spring so the end of the coil (pointed to the rear) is centered in the slide it goes together easily with room to spare to engage the slide lock.

I sent my slide to Home and had Trijicon sights installed. They took a set of M&P sights and cut them down for the shield.

I think that even if the guide rod is centered, the spring can still bind. If you look at it out of the gun, you will notice that it zig-zags from one end of the rod to the other because the spring is longer than the rod and is very stiff. Where it sticks out the most from the rod is probably where it's binding the gun. You can spin the spring and guide rod until it doesn't bind. You can tell when it's in correctly when you can pull the slide far enough back to push the slide stop up. If the slide stops a half inch away from the position where the slide stop can be engaged, you need to spin the spring again.
