I was at my local gun shop and found these, I couldn't pass up the deal, so I bought both of them.:) My first smith revolvers.

I forgot to mention, under $850 out the door! Not sure their worth, both are pre-lock and really clean.

The 6" barrel is a 686-4
The 4" barrel is a no dash

Seems like that's how it often starts. Let's see how many Smiths you have this time next year. For me, none as of 01/01/12. Today, three. Where will it all stop?

Very nice! But fair warning....they are habit forming!!!!
(Not complaining!) :D

Oh, man! You're doomed!
Once those Smith revolvers get their hooks into you....

By the way what dash are they? Inquiring minds want to know.

Post updated the 6" is a dash 4 and the 4" is no dash? not sure if that means anything?

Each dash number was a revision where something on the gun was changed. I defer someone more knowledgeable for when the dash changes happened or what the changes were.
The no-dash is the original made in the early 80's.
That you got them both for under $850 is an awesome deal. Congrats.
I own a 686 4" & a 586 6" - both of them no-dashes.
The 586 buy was a fair price but not a bargain.
The 686 I bought for $340, which is roughly half what they go for locally.

$850 out the door WOW you stole those! Or was it a buy one get one free deal :) I just paid $800 for my 686+. Congrats man.

very nice 686's you have there and you got them at a good price (IMO). Thanks for sharing....... have they made it to the range yet?

My very first S&W revolver was a 6 inch 686-3 Unfluted Cylinder Hunter Edition (the one on top below). I bought it new around Christmas 1989; still have the original box, grips, and handwritten sales receipt. It is without a doubt one of my favorite shooters. Below it is the 629-4. Both can handle the hotstuff all day long.
